Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

and al-Ḥasan ibn Makhlad ibn al-Jarrāḥ, the successor to Ibrāhīm, in Shaʿbān (1).

He said (2): “Hāshim ibn Banjur died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah.”

I add: In that same year there also passed away:
Aḥmad ibn Saʿīd al-Ribāṭī (3);
al-Ḥārith ibn Asad al-Muḥāsibī (4), one of the foremost imams of the Sufis;
Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyā al-Tujībī (5), a disciple of al-Shāfiʿī;
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Jumaḥī (6);
Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Abī ʿUmar al-ʿAdanī (7);
and Hārūn ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥammāl (8).

(1) The words enclosed in parentheses are an addition in manuscripts A and T and do not appear in my copies B and Z. Al-Ṭabarī reports: “In it Ibrāhīm ibn al-‘Abbās died, and the Diwan al-Dhyā‘ was entrusted to al-Ḥasan ibn Makhḫlad ibn al-Jarrāḥ, Ibrahim’s deputy, in Sha‘bān. He is al-Ḥasan ibn Makhlad, Abū Muḥammad al-Baghdādī, the minister al-Akmal of the Kitābiyya, well versed in literature. He held the Diwan al-Dhyā‘ for al-Mutawakkil; in 263 AH al-Mu‘tamid appointed him vizier, dismissed and reinstated him, then dismissed him again in 265 AH. He remained in this unstable position until Aḥmad ibn Ṭūlūn summoned him to Egypt and put him in charge of the province, then fell out of favor, was imprisoned in Antioch, and died there around 269 AH.” See Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’ (vol. 13, p. 7) and al-A‘lam (vol. 2, p. 223). (2) Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī (vol. 9, p. 209); in Ibn al-Athīr: “minjur.” (3) Abū ‘Abd Allāh al-Amīr al-Ribāṭ al-Marwazī, resident of Nishapur, a Ḥāfiẓ entitled al-Ḥujjah (the Proof), al-Mutqin (the Accomplished), and al-Ayqah (the Apt). He transmitted from Wakī‘ and ‘Abd al-Razzāq. See Tārīkh Baghdad (vol. 4, p. 165) and Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’ (vol. 12, p. 207). (4) Abū ‘Abd Allāh, the ascetic and gnostic, shaykh of the Sufis; knowledgeable in uṣūl (principles) and mu‘āmalāt (transactions), a preacher who moved his listeners to tears. He authored works on zuhd (asceticism), the fundamentals of the religion, and refutations of the Mu‘tazilah and the Rafidah. See Ḥilyat al-Awliyā’ (vol. 10, p. 73), Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’ (vol. 12, p. 110), and al-A‘lam (vol. 2, p. 153). (5) Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyā ibn ‘Abd Allāh, Abū Ḥafs al-Tujībī al-Miṣrī. He transmitted extensively from Ibn Wahb, attached himself to al-Shāfi‘ī and studied under him. He authored al-Mukhtaṣar and al-Mabsūṭ. See Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’ (vol. 11, p. 389) and al-‘Ibar (vol. 1, p. 440). (6) Abū Ja‘far, the Musnad traditionist of Basra, who lived to a hundred years; he was a trustworthy companion of hadith. See Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’ (vol. 11, p. 435) and al-‘Ibar (vol. 1, p. 440). (7) In the manuscripts and printed editions it reads “Muḥammad ibn ‘Umar al-‘Adanī,” as confirmed by Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’ and others. He is actually Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn ‘Umar, Abū ‘Abd Allāh al-‘Adanī, a Ḥāfiẓ, author of the Musnad, shaykh of the Ḥaram; he was a pious and upright servant. See Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’ (vol. 12, p. 96) and al-‘Ibar (vol. 1, p. 441). (8) Abū Mūsā al-Baghdādī al-Bazzār, known as al-Ḥammāl. It is said that he adopted asceticism and worked as a porter for wages to support himself; others say he was nicknamed al-Ḥammāl (“the porter”) because of the immense burden of knowledge he carried. See Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’ (vol. 12, p. 115) and al-‘Ibar (vol. 1, p. 441).
