Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Rajāʾ (1) said, “I have never seen anyone like Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal, nor have I met anyone who has seen his equal.”

Abu Zurʿah al-Rāzī stated, “Among the living scholars whose hair is still black, I know no one more versed in jurisprudence than he.”

Al-Bayhaqī transmits from al-Ḥākim, from Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAnbarī, who said: “Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Bushanjī recited to us, concerning Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal—may Allah have mercy on him—(2):

If you should ask who leads us—’tis Ibn Ḥanbal;
Upon his grasp the imams of humankind rely.
He followed the Prophet Muhammad once the ones
Who were the caliphs after him had passed away.
Step for step, like sandal-strap (3) to sandal-strap;
Whoever seeks a pattern finds his pattern there.

It is authentically reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“An ever-present group of my community will remain manifest upon the truth; those who forsake them or oppose them will not harm them until the command of Allah comes while they are still upon it.” (4)

ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubārak, Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal, and others said, “They are the people of hadith.”

Al-Bayhaqī also narrated—through Abu Saʿd al-Mālīnī (5), Ibn ʿAdī, Abu al-Qāsim al-Baghawī, Abu al-Rabīʿ al-Zuhranī, Ḥammād ibn Zayd, Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd, Maʿān ibn Rifāʿah, and Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿAdhrī—. Al-Baghawī added: “Ziād ibn Ayyūb told me; Mubashshir narrated to us, from Maʿān, from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿAdhrī, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared:

“In every generation, the upright among them will carry this knowledge, repelling from it the distortions of the extremists, the fabrications of the false claimants, and the misinterpretations of the ignorant.” (6)

(3) “shirāk”: wearing sandals on the instep of the foot (allowing them to slip off behind the heel). (4) Muslim, Sahih (no. 1925 [170], Kitab al-Imara), from Thawban, with the wording: “A group of my nation will continue to be on the truth; those who forsake them will not harm them until the command of Allah comes while they remain so.” It was also narrated by al-Bukhari (123/250, Kitab al-I‘tisam) and by Muslim (no. 1037 [174], Kitab al-Imara) from Mu‘awiya ibn Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him), with the wording: “A group of my nation will continue to uphold the command of Allah; those who forsake or oppose them will not harm them until the command of Allah comes while they remain manifest over the people.” (5) In the printed edition and other copies it appears as “Abu Sa‘id al-Malini,” which is incorrect. The correct name is Abu Sa‘d al-Malini, namely Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Malini al-Harawi (d. 412 AH). (6) This hadith is well known. It was recorded by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in Sharaf Ashaab al-Hadith (p. 29), by Ibn Waddah in al-Bida‘ wa al-Nahy ‘anha (p. 1), by Ibn Abi Hatim in al-Jarh wa al-Ta‘dil (2/17), by al-‘Uqayli in al-Du‘afa’ (4/256), and by Ibn ‘Adi in al-Kamil (1/153), all via Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-‘Adhri. Al-‘Uqayli remarked: “Some have narrated it as marfu‘ on an unsubstantiated authority.” The author judges the marfu‘ version of this hadith to be weak, which is, God willing, the correct position.
