Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

In that same year there passed away: the Imām Abū Ḥanīfa (1).

His biography:
He is the Imām Abū Ḥanīfa; his personal name is al-Nuʿmān ibn Thābit al-Taymī, a client of that clan from Kūfa, the jurist of Iraq, one of the great Imāms of Islam and its illustrious authorities, a mainstay of the scholars, and among the leading Imāms whose legal schools are followed. He was the earliest of them to die, for he lived in the age of the Companions and, it is said, saw Anas ibn Mālik—and others besides him. Some relate that he transmitted ḥadith from seven of the Companions; Allah knows best (2).

(1) His biography is recorded in the following works: al-Kuna wa al-Asmaʾ by Muslim (vol. 1, p. 276); Tabaqat Khalifa (pp. 167, 327); Bahr al-Dum (p. 430); Maʿrifat al-Thiqat by al-ʿUjli (vol. 2, p. 314); al-Kamil fi al-Duʿafaʾ by Ibn ʿAdi (vol. 7, p. 5); al-Duʿafaʾ by al-ʿUqayli (vol. 4, p. 268); Kitab al-Majruhin by Ibn Hibban (vol. 3, p. 61); al-Duʿafaʾ by Abu Nuʿaym (p. 157); al-Fihrist (p. 284); al-Duʿafaʾ wa al-Matrukin by Ibn al-Jawzi (vol. 3, p. 163); Tahdhib al-Asmaʾ (vol. 2, p. 501); al-Muqtana fi Sard al-Kunaʾ (vol. 1, p. 204); Mawlid al-ʿUlamaʾ wa Wafayatuhum (vol. 1, p. 351); al-Jarh wa al-Taʿdil (vol. 8, p. 449); Tarikh Baghdad (vol. 13, p. 323); Tahdhib al-Kamal (vol. 29, p. 417); al-Kashif (vol. 2, p. 322); Tadhkirat al-Huffaz (vol. 1, p. 168); Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ (vol. 6, p. 390); Mizan al-I‘tidal (vol. 7, p. 37); Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin (p. 57); Taqrib al-Hadith (p. 563); and Tabaqat al-Huffaz (p. 80). (2) Here is an intrusive addition attributed to Q: “It was reported on the authority of a number of the Tabiʿun (Successors), among them al-Hakam, Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman, Salama ibn Kuhayl, ‘Amir al-Shaʿbi, Ikrima, ʿAta, Qatada, al-Zuhri, Nafiʾ the freedman of Ibn ʿUmar, Yahya ibn Saʿid al-Ansari, and Abu Ishaq al-Sabiʾi. A group narrated from him, including his son Hammad, Ibrahim ibn Tahman, Ishaq ibn Yusuf al-Azraq, Asad ibn ʿAmr al-Qadi, al-Hasan ibn Ziyad al-Luʾluʾi, Hamza al-Zayyat, Dawud al-Tai, Zufar, ʿAbd al-Razzaq, Abu Nuʿaym, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani, Hushaym, Wakiʿ, and Abu Yusuf al-Qadi. Yahya ibn Maʿin said: “He was reliable, of the people of truthfulness, and was never accused of lying. Ibn Hubayra offered him a judgeship, but he refused to serve as judge. Yahya ibn Saʿid used to prefer his opinion in fatwas. He would say, ‘By God, we have never heard anything better than Abu Hanifa’s view.’ He adopted most of his opinions. ʿAbdullah ibn al-Mubarak said: “Were it not that God rescued me through Abu Hanifa and Sufyan al-Thawri, I would be like everyone else.” Al-Shafiʿi said of Malik: “I saw a man who, if he told you that this pole was gold, would support his claim with proof.” Al-Shafiʿi also said: “Whoever seeks fiqh (jurisprudence) is a dependent on Abu Hanifa; whoever seeks siyar (biographical knowledge) is a dependent on Muhammad ibn Ishaq; whoever seeks hadith is a dependent on Malik; whoever seeks tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis) is a dependent on Muqatil ibn Sulayman.” ʿAbdullah ibn Dawud al-Khuraybi said: “People should pray for Abu Hanifa in their prayers, for his preservation of fiqh and the sunnah.” Sufyan al-Thawri and Ibn al-Mubarak said: “Abu Hanifa was the most learned of the people of his time.” Abu Nuʿaym said: “He was a master of depth (ghaws) in legal issues.” Maki ibn Ibrahim said: “He was the most knowledgeable of the people of the earth.””
