Salih, the freedman of al-Mansur, related:
When Ibrahim’s head was brought in, al-Mansur convened a public audience. People filed before him, congratulating him and railing at Ibrahim, pouring out harsh words in hopes of currying al-Mansur’s favor, while al-Mansur himself sat silent, his complexion altered, uttering not a word. Matters remained so until Jaʿfar ibn Ḥanzalah al-Bahrani entered. He halted, gave the greeting, and said,
“May Allah magnify your reward, Commander of the Faithful, for the loss of your cousin, and may He forgive him for whatever shortcoming he showed toward your due.”
At that the color drained from al-Mansur’s face. He turned to him and said, “Abu Khalid, welcome and an honored welcome—sit here.” The onlookers realized how pleased he was, so thereafter everyone who came in repeated the very formula Jaʿfar ibn Ḥanzalah had used.
Abu Nuʿaym al-Faḍl ibn Dukayn said:
Ibrahim was killed on a Thursday, five days before the end of Dhu al-Ḥijjah of that year.
Those of note who died in the same year were:
• From the eminent members of the Ahl al-Bayt: ʿAbd Allah ibn Ḥasan; his two sons Muḥammad and Ibrahim; his brother Ḥasan ibn Ḥasan; and his half-brother Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthman ibn ʿAffan, surnamed al-Dībāj—his biography has already been given (1).
As for his brother ʿAbd Allah ibn Ḥasan ibn Ḥasan ibn ʿAli ibn Abi Ṭalib (2): he was a Qurashi, a Hashimi, and one of the Successors. He transmitted hadith from his father, from his mother Fāṭimah bint al-Ḥusayn, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abi Ṭalib—a venerable Companion—and from others. A number of scholars narrated from him, among them Sufyān al-Thawri, al-Darawardi, and Mālik. The scholars held him in high regard, and he was noted for his devotion and lofty station.
Yahya ibn Maʿin said: “He was reliable and truthful.” He visited ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, who honored him, and he visited al-Saffah, who treated him graciously and bestowed upon him one million dirhams. When al-Mansur assumed power, however, he dealt with him in the opposite manner, and the same befell his children and household. All of them have now passed away and met their Lord—exalted is He.
