were before them; and He will surely abase their dominion just as He abased the dominion of those who came before them. He then recited Allah’s words: “Such are the days We alternate among the people” (Āl ʿImrān 3:140). [Its isnād is weak and mursal].
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā (1) said: Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd narrated to me; Abū Usāmah narrated to us; ʿUmar ibn Ḥamzah narrated to us; ʿUmar ibn Sayf (2), a client of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, informed me. He said: I heard Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib speaking to Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and Abū Bakr ibn Sulaymān ibn Abī Khaythamah. When they mentioned the Banū Umayyah he said, “Their ruin will come only from among themselves.” They asked, “How so?” He replied, “Their caliphs will perish while their wicked ones remain; they will vie with one another for power, then the common people will rise against them and bring them down.”
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān said: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Azraqī informed us; al-Zanjī narrated to us from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “In a dream I saw the Banū Abī al-Ḥakam—or the Banū Abī al-ʿĀṣ—springing upon my pulpit the way monkeys leap.” He added: After that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was never again seen laughing fully until he passed away (3).
Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dārimī (4) said: Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Zayd—the brother of Ḥammād ibn Zayd—narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥakam al-Bunānī, from Abū al-Ḥasan, the one from Ḥimṣ, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah—who was a Companion—who said:
Al-Ḥakam ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ came seeking permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Prophet recognized his voice. He said, “Let him in. May Allah’s curse be poured upon him and upon those who issue from his loins—except for the believers, and they are but few. They will be honored in this world and debased in the Hereafter; people of cunning and deceit, granted (their share) in this world while in the Hereafter they shall have no portion.” (5)
Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī said: Abū ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Muḥammad informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Muẓaffar the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū al-Qāsim Tammām ibn Khuraym ibn Muḥammad ibn Marwān al-Dimashqī informed us; Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Hishām ibn Malābis informed us; Abū al-Naẓar Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Yazīd, the client of Umm al-Ḥakam bint ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Rabīʿah narrated to us; Abū al-Ashʿath al-Ṣanʿānī narrated to us, from Thawbān, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sleeping with his head resting on the thigh of Umm Ḥabībah bint Abī Sufyān. He sobbed and then smiled. They said, “O Messenger of Allah, we saw you sob and then smile!”
