Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

hadith in the Tafsir (1) at length—praise and gratitude belong to Allah. It becomes plausible only if one were to say that their dynasty lasted a thousand months by subtracting the days of ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr. Muʿāwiyah was given the pledge of allegiance as sole ruler in the year 40 AH—the “Year of Unity,” when al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī handed the affair over to him six months after ʿAlī’s death. The caliphate then passed from the Umayyads in the year 132 AH, a period of ninety-two years. If the nine years of Ibn al-Zubayr’s caliphate are deducted, what remains is eighty-three years—at variance with what is mentioned in this ḥadīth. Moreover, this report is not raised to the Prophet ﷺ as an interpretation of the verse with that number; rather, it is the statement of one of the narrators. We have treated the matter in detail in the Tafsir (2), and it has also been set forth earlier in al-Dalāʾil; Allah knows best.

ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī related from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I saw the sons of Umayyah climbing my pulpit, and it distressed me, so the verse was revealed: ‘Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Decree’” (Q 97:1). This report is weak and has a broken chain (3).

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Khaythamah said: Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Numayr narrated to us, from Sufyān, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, regarding the verse, “And the vision We showed you We only made as a trial for the people” (Q 17:60). He said: “The Prophet saw some men of the Banu Umayyah on the pulpits, and it upset him. It was said to him, ‘It is only worldly authority that they will be given, which will soon fade away,’ whereupon he was relieved.” (4)

Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī narrated from al-Rabīʿ who said: “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken on the Night Journey, he saw so-and-so—one of the Banu Umayyah—standing on the pulpit addressing the people, and it distressed him; so Allah revealed, ‘And I do not know; perhaps it is a trial for you and an enjoyment for a while’” (Q 21:111). (5)

Mālik ibn Dīnār said: I heard Abū al-Jawzāʾ say, “By Allah, Allah will surely exalt (6) the dominion of the Banu Umayyah just as He exalted the dominion of those who …”

(1) Tafsir Ibn Kathir (vol. 4, pp. 530–531) on the exegesis of Surah al-Qadr. (2) Among what the author observes in his commentary: One proof of the weakness of this hadith is that it was introduced to disparage the Umayyad state; had that been the intent, it would not appear in this context. For the preference of Laylat al-Qadr over “their days” does not imply blame of those days, since Laylat al-Qadr is supremely honored, and this noble surah was revealed to praise that night—so how could praise consist in preferring it over the days of the Umayyads, which by this hadith are cast in a negative light? (3) It is narrated by al-Khatib in Tarikh Baghdad (vol. 9, p. 44) and mentioned by Ibn al-Jawzi in Al-ʿIlal al-Mutanahiyah (vol. 2, p. 701 [no. 1170]), both recording the wording: “I saw the Umayyads in the form of apes and pigs ascending…” Its chain of transmission is weak. (4) Al-Suyuti records it in Al-Durr al-Manthur (vol. 5, p. 310) in his exegesis of the verse, stating that it is also reported by Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Mardawayh, al-Bayhaqi in Al-Dalāʾil, and Ibn ʿAsakir. I note that its chain of transmission is weak. (5) Its chain of transmission is weak. (6) In some manuscripts the wording appears as “li-yughayyiranna Allah.”
