the All-Merciful, someone may be asked, “Would you like to die?” He answers, “No.” He is then asked, “Why not?” He replies, “So that I may act.” He is told, “Then act!” and he says, “I will—later.” So you neither wish to die nor do you wish to act! What you love most of all is to postpone the work Allah requires of you, yet you do not wish Him to postpone from you the portion of this world!
Servants of the All-Merciful, a man may perform one single obligation that Allah has enjoined while neglecting all the others. Satan keeps filling him with false hopes and adorning his state for him until he imagines that nothing short of Paradise awaits him, even as he persists in disobeying Allah.
Servants of the All-Merciful, before you undertake any deed, look to what you intend by it: if it is purely for Allah, then proceed; but if it is for other than Allah, do not burden yourselves, for Allah accepts only that work which is done sincerely for Him. He has said: “To Him ascend good words, and righteous action He elevates” (Fāṭir 35:10).
He also said: “Allah is not swift in punishing you; He accepts the one who turns toward Him and (1) calls the one who turns away.”
He further said: “When you see a man excessively scrupulous, obstinate, argumentative, and enamored of his own opinion, his ruin is complete.”
Al-Awzāʿī related: The people of Damascus once went out to pray for rain. Bilal ibn Saʿd stood among them and said, “O assembly who are present, do you not admit your wrongdoing?” They replied, “Indeed.” He then said, “O Allah, You have said, ‘No blame is there upon the doers of good’ (at-Tawbah 9:91). We acknowledge our wrongdoing, so pardon us and forgive us.” And they were granted rain that very day.
He also said: I heard him remark, “I lived among people who would race between the archery butts and laugh with one another, but when night enveloped them they became monks (2).”
I likewise heard him say: “Do not look at the smallness of the sin; look at the One you have disobeyed.”
I heard him say: “Whoever initiates kindness toward you has enslaved you with gratitude.”
Among his supplications was: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the deviation of hearts, from the consequences of sins, from ruinous deeds, and from misleading trials (3).”
