“…a sin against Allah, and remind him of the sins he has committed between you and him.” (Narrated by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya, 4:88–89.)
Qutayba said: “Ja‘far ibn Burqan told us: I heard Maymun ibn Mihran say, ‘A man is not among the God-conscious until he holds himself to account more harshly than a partner rebukes his partner—until he knows from where his food comes, from where his drink comes [and from where his clothing comes]: is it from what is lawful or from what is unlawful?’” (Ibid., p. 89.)
Abu Zur‘ah al-Razi (on Q: identifying him with Abu Zur‘ah al-Darimi, authenticated in al-Hilya) reported: Sa‘id ibn Hafs al-Nufayli narrated from Abu al-Malih on the authority of Maymun, who said, “The wicked person is like a beast of prey; if you speak of him and then let him go, you have unleashed a predator upon the Muslims.” (Narrated in al-Hilya, 4:91.)
Ja‘far ibn Burqan said: “I asked Maymun ibn Mihran, ‘So-and-so delays arranging a visit to you.’ He replied, ‘If affection is firmly established in the heart, there is no harm even if the stay is prolonged.’” (Ibid.)
Imam Ahmad transmitted: “Maymun al-Raqqi told us, Hasan Abu al-Malih related from Maymun, who said, ‘You will find no adversary more insignificant to you than your own stomach or back.’” (Ibid.)
Imam Ahmad also reported: “‘Abd Allah ibn Maymun told us, Hasan narrated from Habib ibn Abi Marzuq, who said, ‘I saw under Maymun’s outer garments a woolen cloak. I asked him about it. He replied, “Yes—but do not tell anyone.”’” (Narrated by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya, 4:91–92.)
‘Abd Allah ibn Ahmad recorded: “Yahya ibn Uthman informed me, Abu al-Malih related from Maymun, who said, ‘He who sins in secret should repent in private, and he who sins openly should repent publicly, for Allah forgives without reproach, whereas people reproach without forgiving.’” (Narrated in al-Hilya, 92:4.)
Ja‘far continued: Maymun said, “Wealth has three hazards: if its owner is saved from one, he will not be saved from two; if he is saved from two, he is bound to fall into the third. First, it must be lawful and pure: who among you safeguards his income so that only what is pure enters it? If one is safe from this, he must then discharge the obligations due upon his wealth. If he is safe from these, then in his expenditure he should avoid both extravagance and miserliness.” And he added, “I heard Maymun say, ‘The easiest aspect of fasting is foregoing food and drink.’” (Narrated in al-Hilya, 4:89–90.)
‘Abd Allah ibn Ahmad further transmitted: “Yahya ibn Uthman al-Harbi told us, Abu al-Malih reported from Maymun ibn Mihran, who said, ‘No man—prophet or otherwise—attains substantial good except through patience.’” (Narrated in al-Hilya, 4:90.)
With this chain he said, “The world is sweet and verdant, surrounded by desires, and Satan is a present enemy. One thus assumes that the matter of the Hereafter is remote, while the matter of this world is immediate.” (Ibid.)
Yunus ibn Ubayda said: “A plague struck near the lands of Maymun ibn Mihran, so I wrote to inquire after his family. He replied, ‘I received your letter asking about my kin. Alas, seventeen of my relatives and close ones have died. I dislike affliction when it approaches, yet when it departs I am not pleased it had not occurred. As for you, cling to the Book of Allah, for people have taken solace in it—they have grown attached to it—and they choose hadiths of men. Beware of disputation in religion.’” Abu Ubayd comments in al-Gharib (referring to al-Qasim ibn Sallam’s al-Gharib al-Hadith, 4:473): “They took solace in it (baha’u bihi), with the hamzated ba, meaning they found comfort in it.” He notes that the phrase was corrupted in al-Hilya and in Q, and he restores the reading from al-Gharib al-Hadith.
Amr ibn Maymun said: “I was with my father circumambulating the Ka‘ba when my father met an old man and embraced him; alongside the old man was a youth about my age. Then he said…” [Text cuts off here]
