Section:
As for Sa‘īd ibn Yasar, he was among the devout worshippers and ascetics. He transmitted hadith from a group of the Companions, as did al-A‘raj and Ibn Abī Mulaykah.
As for Maymūn ibn Mihrān (see his biography in Ibn Sa‘d’s Ṭabaqāt, vol. 7, p. 477; Khalīfah’s Ṭabaqāt, p. 319; Tārīkh Khalīfah, p. 347; al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr, 7/338; al-Tārīkh al-Ṣaghīr, 1/319, 321; al-Jarḥ wa-al-Ta‘dīl, 8/233; Al-Thiqāt of Ibn Ḥibbān, 5/417; Ḥilyat al-Awliyā’, 4/82; Ṭabaqāt al-Shīrāzī, p. 77; Ṣifat al-Ṣafwah, 4/193; al-Mukhtār min Manāqib al-Akhyār of Ibn al-Athīr, 5/79; Mukhtaṣar Tārīkh Dimashq, 26/60; Tahdhīb al-Kamāl, 29/210; Siyar A‘lām al-Nubalā’, 5/71; Tadhkarat al-Ḥuffāẓ, 1/98; al-‘Ibar, 1/147; Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, 10/390; Ṭabaqāt al-Ḥuffāẓ, p. 39; Ṭabaqāt al-Shi‘rānī, 1/40; al-Kawākib al-Durriyyah, 1/463; Shudhūr al-Dhahab, 1/154), he was one of the foremost scholars of the Tabi‘īn (the generation following the Companions), and among their leading ascetics, worshippers, and imams. Maymūn was the principal authority in the al-Jazīrah region.
Al-Ṭabarānī reports that someone asked him, “Why does your brother never leave your side in speech?” He replied, “Because I neither command him nor motion him.” (Recorded by al-Mizzī in Tahdhīb al-Kamāl, 29/221.)
‘Amr ibn Maymūn said, “My father did not engage excessively in prayer or fasting, but he detested any disobedience to Allah.” (Mentioned by Ibn al-Jawzī in Ṣifat al-Ṣafwah, 4/193.)
Ibn Abī ‘Adī relates from Yūnus that he said, “Never argue with a scholar or with an ignorant person. For if you argue with a scholar, he will withhold his knowledge from you; and if you argue with an ignorant person, your chest will harden.” (Reported by Abū Nu‘aym in al-Ḥilyah, 4/82; and cited by al-Mizzī in Tahdhīb al-Kamāl, 29/222.)
‘Amr ibn Maymūn also recounted:
“Once I went out guiding my father along a road in Basrah. We came to a stream which he could not cross, so I lay down for him to step over my back. Then I helped him up and led him to al-Ḥasan’s house. I knocked, and a six-year-old slave-girl opened and asked, ‘Who is this?’ I said, ‘Maymūn ibn Mihrān, wishing to meet al-Ḥasan.’ She replied, ‘The secretary of ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz?’ ‘Yes,’ I answered. ‘O unlucky one,’ she said, ‘why have you survived until this dreadful era?’ My father began to weep, and when al-Ḥasan heard him, he came out and embraced him. They entered together, and Maymūn said, ‘O Abū Sa‘īd, you have softened my heart; be gentle with me.’ (The reading in some copies is “be subdued,” but al-Ḥilyah reads “be gentle.”) Al-Ḥasan then recited:
“‘Have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years, then came to them what they were promised—there availed them not what they were enjoying?’” [Quran 26:205–207]
Upon hearing this, my father fell unconscious; I saw him convulsing like a sheep at slaughter. He lay so for a long while, until the slave-girl said, ‘You have distressed the old man; please leave.’ I took my father’s hand and we departed. I asked him, ‘O father, is that al-Ḥasan?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘I had imagined he was greater than this.’ Then he tapped my chest and said, ‘My son, he recited a verse for us which, if you had comprehended it in your heart, you would have found in it bitterness.’” (Recorded by Abū Nu‘aym in al-Ḥilyah, 4/82–83.)
