1. A famine occurred aboard the Ark, so whenever Noah manifested himself to the people, they were filled. (Abu Nuʿaym, al-Hilya, vol. 4, p. 67; al-Dhahabi, Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ, vol. 4, p. 551.) 2. Jesus said: “Truly, I say to you, the one among you who is most distressed by calamity is the one who loves the world most.” (Abu Nuʿaym, al-Hilya, vol. 4, p. 67.) 3. Jaʿfar b. Burqān reported that Wahb used to say: “Blessed is he who sees his own faults rather than those of others; blessed is he who humbles himself before God without abasement; who has mercy on the humiliated and the needy; who gives charity from wealth acquired without sin; who sits with the people of knowledge, forbearance, and wisdom; and whose practice remains within the bounds of the Sunnah without crossing into innovation.” (Ibid.) 4. Sayyār transmitted from Jaʿfar, from ʿAbd al-Samad b. Maʿqil, from Wahb, who said: • “I found in David’s Psalms (Zabūr): ‘O David, do you know who are the swiftest to pass over the Sirāt? Those who are content with My judgment, and whose tongues are moist with My remembrance.’” (Ibid.) • And its continuation: “Do you know which poor are best? Those who accept My two judgments and My decree, and praise Me for what I have bestowed on them.” • And: “O David, do you know which believers hold the highest rank with Me? It is the one who rejoices more in what I have given than he grieves for what I have withheld.” 5. It is related that a worshipper served God for fifty years. God revealed to their prophet: “I have forgiven him.” When the prophet informed the worshipper, he asked: “O Lord, what sin are You forgiving me for, though I have committed none?” God then sent a muscle spasm to his neck. He neither slept nor rested nor performed his night prayer until the spasm subsided. He complained to the prophet, who said: “What was this spasm that struck your neck and would not leave?” The prophet replied: “God says: ‘Your fifty years of worship are not equal to the stillness of this spasm.’” (Abu Nuʿaym, al-Hilya, vol. 4, p. 68.) 6. Wahb said: “The principal blessings are three: the blessing of Islām, without which no blessing is complete; the blessing of health, without which life cannot be pleasant; and the blessing of sufficiency, without which one cannot truly live.” (Ibid.) 7. Wahb passed by a man afflicted with blindness, leprosy, paralysis, nakedness, and festering sores, who nevertheless said: “Praise be to God for His blessings.” A companion asked: “What blessing remains for you to praise God for?” The afflicted man replied: “Keep looking at the people of the city and note their great numbers—should I not praise God that there is no one among them who recognizes me except myself?” (Ibid.) 8. Wahb said: “The believer mingles to learn, remains silent to be safe, speaks to understand, and withdraws to find bliss.” (In the original version: “to instruct them (li-yafqahuhum) and withdraw to establish (li-yuqīm),” but the form confirmed above appears in the same source.) 9. He also said: “The believer is reflective, reminds others, and stores. When he reflects, tranquility overcomes him; then, when he becomes calm, he humbles himself and incurs no reproach. He rejects desires and so becomes free; casts off envy and finds love revealed to him; renounces all that perishes and thereby perfects his intellect; aspires to all that endures and thus attains knowledge. His heart clings to his spiritual aspiration, and his aspiration is directed toward his Hereafter. He does not rejoice when the people of the world rejoice—his sorrow over it is eternal—and his joy is when eyes fall asleep. He recites the Book of God and imprints it on his heart; sometimes his heart is emptied, sometimes his eye weeps. He sacrifices the night for recitation, the day for seclusion and solitude, pondering his sins and belittling his deeds.” (Ibid.) 10. Wahb said: “On the Day of Resurrection, amid that great assembly at the summits of creation, a voice will call: ‘Rise up, O noble one, and enter Paradise.’” (Ibid.) 11. It was narrated by Ibrāhīm b. Saʿīd, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Masʿūd, from Thawr b. Yazīd, who said: Wahb b. Munabbih said: “Woe to you when people call you ‘righteous’ and honor you for it.” (Abu Nuʿaym, al-Hilya, vol. 4, p. 69.)
