(4/59) Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal reported: Muhammad ibn Ayyub narrated to us, Abu Bakr ibn ‘Ayyash from Idris ibn Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said: My father told me that Sulaiman ibn Dawud possessed a thousand chambers—its upper parts of crystal and its lower of iron. One day the wind carried him past a plowman (harrāth). The plowman, marveling at Solomon’s power, exclaimed, “Indeed, the house of Dawud has been granted a mighty kingdom!” The wind conveyed this remark into Solomon’s ear. He commanded the wind to halt, then descended and approached the plowman, saying: “I heard your words. I came to you so that you would not covet what you cannot achieve of what God, in His grace and bounty, has enabled me to do—He who established and aided me. Moreover, a single tasbīḥ (glorification) sincerely accepted by God from you or any believer is better than the entire kingdom granted to the house of Dawud; for the worldly realm perishes, whereas glorification endures.” The plowman replied, “May God remove your concern as you removed mine.” (Source as above.)
Imam Aḥmad reported: Ibrāhīm ibn ‘Aqīl ibn Ma‘qil narrated to us, from my father, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said: God gave Mūsa (peace be upon him) a light. Hārūn said, “Grant it to me, O brother.” Mūsa gave it to him, and Hārūn bestowed it upon his two sons. In Jerusalem there were vessels venerated by prophets and kings; Hārūn’s sons used them to pour wine, whereupon fire descended from heaven and seized them. Hārūn was terrified and cried out, facing the heavens in supplication. God revealed to him: “O Hārūn, thus do I deal with those from among My obedient who disobey Me; so how will I deal with those who defy Me from among the disobedient?” (Abu Nu‘aym, al-Hilya 4/59.)
Al-Ḥakam ibn Abān said: A guest from Ṣan‘ā’ visited me and said, “I heard Wahb ibn Munabbih say: God has in the seventh heaven a house called al-Bayḍā’ (the White), where He gathers the souls of the believers. When a person of this world dies, these souls receive him and question him about the affairs of this life just as victors inquire of their families upon return.” (Abu Nu‘aym, al-Hilya 4/60.)
He also said: “Whoever places his desire under his foot causes Satan to flee from his shadow; and whoever finds his knowledge overcome by his passion—that is the ‘ālim al-ghallāb (the overwhelming scholar).” (Source as above.)
Fuḍayl ibn ‘Iyāḍ reported: Wahb ibn Munabbih said: God revealed to one of His prophets: “By My might, how much My devoted servants endure for My sake and how they toil in seeking My pleasure! But how will it be for them when they reach My abode and revel in the gardens of My bounty? There the small in number shall be welcomed by an astonishing glance from their near Beloved. Do you think I shall forget any of their deeds? How could I, when I am Possessor of immense bounty! How much more shall I grant to those who turn to Me, when those who turn away yet receive My bounty! If My believing servants could see how I reward My distant servants and then honor those who draw near Me with eternal dwellings, they would not doubt My generosity and nobility. I am the Judge before Whose disobedience no sin can stand unpunished, and those who obey Me do so by My mercy. I have no need for the abasement of those who fear My majesty. If My servants see on the Day of Resurrection how I raise palaces that confound every gaze, they will ask, ‘For whom are these?’ I will say, ‘For those who gave Me a single sin that did not involve defiance of Me or despair of My mercy.’ Indeed, I reward praise with praise—so praise Me!” (Abu Nu‘aym, al-Hilya 4/60–61; another version 10/81.)
Salama ibn Shabīb reported: Salama ibn ‘Āṣim told us, from ‘Abdullah ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Uqba, from ‘Abdurraḥmān Abū Ṭālūt, from Muhājir al-Asadī, from Wahb, who said: “‘Īsā ibn Maryam (Jesus), together with his disciples, passed by a village whose inhabitants had died, …” (text incomplete).
