My blessing has no end; if I am disobeyed I become angry; and when I become angry I curse—and my curse reaches to the seventh generation. (Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4/41; Abu al-Faraj ibn al-Jawzi in Dhamm al-Hawa, p. 182; and Ibn al-Qayyim in al-Jawab al-Kafi, p. 34.)
He also said: “Among the Children of Israel there was a man who disobeyed Allah for two hundred years. When he died, they dragged his corpse by the leg and threw it on a refuse heap. Allah revealed to Moses that he should pray for him. Moses said, ‘O Lord, the Children of Israel bear witness that he disobeyed You for two hundred years.’ Allah replied, ‘Indeed that is so, except that each time he spread out the Torah and saw the name of Muhammad ﷺ he would pray for him, place it upon his eyes, and pray over him—and for that I showed gratitude by forgiving his sins and marrying him to seventy houris.’ This report is narrated with defects, is not authentic, and its chain is odd and its text severely objectionable. (Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4/42.)
Ibn Idris narrated from his father, from Wahb, who said that Moses prayed, ‘O Lord, turn away people’s speech from me.’ Allah said to him, ‘O Moses, I did not do this for Myself.’ (Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4/42.)
He also said: “When Joseph was summoned to the king, he stood at the gate and proclaimed, ‘My religion suffices me against my world, and my Lord suffices me against His creation. May Your neighbor’s majesty be exalted, may Your praise be glorified, and there is no god but You.’ Then he entered before the king. When the king saw him, he rose from his throne, prostrated, then seated Joseph beside him and said, ‘You are today established and trustworthy with us. Appoint me over the treasuries of the land; indeed I am Guardian, All-Knowing’ [Quran 12:54–55]. He is Guardian over these years and all that You have entrusted to me, and All-Knowing in the language of anyone who comes to me.” (Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4/42.)
Imam Ahmad narrated that Mundhir ibn al-Nu‘man al-Aftas heard Wahb say: “When Allah commanded the whale neither to harm him nor speak to him”—meaning Jonah—Allah said, “If he had not been among those who glorify [Me], he would have stayed in its belly until the Day of Resurrection” [Quran 37:143–144]. He had been devout before that, and Allah reminded him of his prior worship. When he emerged from the sea, he slept. Allah caused a gourd (yaqtin, the dubbā’) to grow, and when Jonah awoke and saw its shade and greenery he was delighted. He slept again, then woke to find it withered and lamented over it. Allah said, “You did not create it, nor water it, nor cause it to grow, yet you grieve for it? And I am He who created a hundred thousand from fire or more, yet I had mercy on them—was that too difficult for you?” (Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4/42–43; similarly in al-Qurtubi’s Tafsir 15/130.)
Imam Ahmad also narrated via Ibrahim ibn Khalid al-Ghassani from Rabah, from ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Abd al-Majid ibn Khushk, from Wahb, who said: “When Noah was ordered to take aboard two of each pair, he asked, ‘O Lord, what of the lion and the ox? What of the ‘anaq and the wolf?’ (‘Anaq: the female goat after a year.) ‘And what of the pigeon and the cat?’ Allah said, ‘Who instilled enmity between them?’ He replied, ‘You, O Lord.’ Allah said, ‘I will reconcile them so they will not harm one another.’” (Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4/43.)
And Wahb said to ‘Ata’ al-Khurasani, “Woe to you, ‘Ata’! Did you not hear that you carry your knowledge to the doors of kings, the sons of the world, and the palaces of princes? Woe to you! Will you approach one who shuts his door against you, displays his poverty before you, hides his wealth from you, yet leave the door of Him who says, ‘Call upon Me; I will respond to you’ [Quran 40:60]? Woe to you, ‘Ata’! If what sufficed you existed in the world, then the least in the world would suffice you; and if it did not, then nothing in the world would suffice. Woe to you, ‘Ata’! Your belly is but a sea among seas and a valley among valleys, and nothing will ever fill it but dust.” (Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya.)
