and in that same year the following man passed away:
Wahb ibn Munabbih al-Yamani (1): a distinguished Tabiʿi (Successor), well-versed in the scriptures of the earlier communities. He was akin to Kaʿb al-Ahbar in this respect, and he was noted for his righteousness and devotion. Uplifting sayings, wise maxims, and admonitions are related from him. We have set out his biography at length in our book al-Takmil—praise be to Allah.
Al-Waqidi (2) said: He died in Sanaʿa in the year 110 AH. Others said: a year later; and some said even later than that. Allah knows best.
Some people claim that his grave is to the west of Busra, in a village called ʿUsm (3); I have found no evidence for this. Allah knows best (4).
(1) His biography appears in: Ibn Saʿd, Tabaqat al-Kubra, vol. 5, p. 543; Tarikh Khalifa, p. 340; Tabaqat Khalifa, p. 287; al-Zuhd by Imam Ahmad, p. 371; al-Tarikh al-Kabir, vol. 8, p. 164; al-Maʿarif, p. 459; al-Jarh wa al-Taʿdil, vol. 9, p. 24; Thiqāt Ibn Hibban, vol. 5, p. 487; Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ, vol. 4, p. 23; Tabaqat al-Shirazi, p. 74; al-Ansab, vol. 1, p. 122; Sifat al-Safwa, vol. 2, p. 291; al-Mukhtar min Manaqib al-Akhyar, vol. 5, p. 108; Muʿjam al-Udabaʾ, vol. 19, p. 259; Wafayāt al-Aʿyān, vol. 6, p. 35; Mukhtasar Tarikh Dimashq, vol. 26, p. 385; Tahdhib al-Kamal, vol. 31, p. 140; Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ, vol. 4, p. 544; Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, vol. 1, p. 100; Mizan al-Iʿtidāl, vol. 4, p. 352; Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, vol. 11, p. 166; Tabaqat al-Huffaz, p. 41; Tabaqat al-Shayrani, vol. 1, p. 40; al-Kawākib al-Durriyya, vol. 1, p. 477; Shadharat al-Dhahab, vol. 1, p. 150. (4) Another addition in manuscript Q, not found in B or H, reads: “Wahb ibn Munabbih met several Companions and narrated from Ibn ʿAbbas, Jabir, and al-Nuʿman ibn Bashir; he transmitted from Muʿadh ibn Jabal, Abu Hurayra, and Tawus; and he received from several Tabiʿin. He said, ‘The example of one who learns knowledge but does not act upon it is like that of a physician who has a remedy but does not use it.’ From Munir, the mawla (freedman) of al-Fadl ibn Abi ʿIyash: ‘I was sitting with Wahb when a man came and told him, “I passed by so-and-so and he was insulting you.” Wahb became angry and said, “Has not Satan found another messenger than you?” Before I left, the same reviler returned, greeted Wahb, who responded, extended his hand, shook it, and seated him at his side’ (Abu Nuʿaym, Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ, 4:71; Ibn al-Jawzi, Sifat al-Safwa, 2:295). Ibn al-Tawus related, ‘I heard Wahb say, “O son of Adam, attend to your religion, for your provision will come to you.”’ (Abu Nuʿaym, Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ, 4:72). Wahb also said, ‘The inhabitants of Hell were clothed, yet nakedness would have been better for them; they were fed, yet hunger would have been better for them; they were granted life, yet death would have been better for them’ (Abu Nuʿaym, Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ, 4:71). He added that David (peace be upon him) prayed, ‘O Allah, any poor man who asks a rich man and is turned away—so I ask You: when he calls upon You, do not respond; and if he asks You, do not give him’ (Abu Nuʿaym, Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ, 4:71). And he said, ‘I read in some of the Books of Allah: “O son of Adam, there is no benefit in knowing what you did not know if you do not act upon what you have known; like a man who gathered firewood, bundled it, then set out to carry it but could not, so he added more to it”’ (Abu Nuʿaym, Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ, 4:71).
