The following additions (marked “Q”) were inserted into the main text: [He was a scholar, worshipper, ascetic, humble, of few words, and he transmitted many reports from certain Companions and Tābiʿīn (Followers). Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh said: “When you see someone greater than you among the Muslims, say: ‘I preceded him in sin, so he is better than me.’ And when you see your brothers honoring and exalting you, say: ‘This is by the grace of my Lord.’ And when you observe any negligence among them, say: ‘This is due to a sin I committed.’” (Narrated by Abu Nuʿaym in Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ, vol. 2, p. 226.) He said: “Who is like you, O son of Ādam? Let there be only water and the mihrab (prayer niche) between you and your Lord; whenever you wish, you purify yourself (perform wuḍūʾ) and enter upon your Lord. There is no intermediary or veil between you and Him.” He said: “A servant does not become truly pious until he is slow in desire and slow in anger.” (In Q: “fearing desire, fearing anger”; the established reading is in Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ, vol. 2, p. 225.) He said: “If you see a man entrusted with other people’s faults while forgetting his own, know that he has been deceived.” He said: “A man from the Children of Israel, when he reached a sound level of righteous deeds, would be shaded by a cloud among the people. Once a man passed under the cloud that shaded someone; he honored him for what Allah had granted him. The man under the cloud despised him, so Allah ordered the cloud to move from over the despiser’s head to the head of the one he had despised—namely, the one who had glorified the matter of Allah.” (Reported by Abu Nuʿaym in Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ, vol. 2, p. 226.) He said: “Abu Bakr did not surpass them by many prayers or fasts, but by something firmly established in his heart.” He has many excellent sayings, too numerous to list here.] (2) His biography appears in: Ibn Saʿd, Tabaqāt al-Kubrā, vol. 7, p. 456; al-Ḏhahabī, al-Tarīkh al-Kabīr, vol. 2, p. 292; al-Ḏhahabī, al-Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl, vol. 3, p. 483; Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ, vol. 6, p. 117; al-Mizzī, Tahdhīb al-Kamāl, vol. 9, p. 8; al-Ḏhahabī, Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ, vol. 4, p. 490.
