1. Aḥmad said: “Abd al-Razzāq narrated to us, Muʿammar narrated to us, that Tawūs attended a companion of his who was ill, so that he missed the pilgrimage—perhaps this is the man mentioned earlier who had cupping performed on his abdomen. 2. Masʿar ibn Kidām reported from ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Muʿallim (in some manuscripts written ‘ʿAbd al-Kabīr al-Muʿallim,’ a scribal error; the correct identification is ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Abī al-Mukhāriq, Abū Umayya al-Baṣrī al-Muʿallim). His report is found in Sunan Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr (1/194), Musannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah (2/257), Musannaf ʿAbd al-Razzāq (2/488), Shuʿab al-Īmān of al-Bayhaqī (2/388), his biographical entry in al-Kunā wa-al-Asmāʾ of Muslim (1/82), al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (6/89), and al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl (6/59). He is ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Abī al-Mukhāriq, Abū Umayya al-Baṣrī al-Muʿallim. Tawūs said: Ibn ʿAbbās was asked, “Who recites best?” He replied: “He whose recitation makes you see that he fears Allah.” Its chain is weak and cannot be accepted as continuous (mawṣūl). It has been reported as continuous by: • Abū Nuʿaym in Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ (4/19) and in Akhbār Isfahān (2/90) • al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān (1958) It also appears mursal (disconnected) from Tawūs in: • ʿAbd al-Razzāq (4185) • Ibn Abī Shaybah (10/464) • al-Dārimī (2/471) • al-Bayhaqī in al-Shuʿūb (1959) Commentary of al-Bazzār (Kashf al-Astar 2326): “Ḥamīd did not transmit this chain; it was narrated by Masʿar from ʿAbd al-Karīm from Mujāhid as mursal, and Masʿar did not hear it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār. We only know it from Muḥammad ibn Muʿammar, who brought it from his book.” Ibn ʿAdī comments (al-Bashshār 2/693): “The correct form is mursal from Tawūs … narrated by Abū Usāmah as mursal.” It is also reported by Ibn Mājah (no. 1339) from Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, mursal, and its chain is weak. 3. It is also transmitted via Ibn Luhayʿah from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār from Tawūs that Ibn ʿAbbās said: The Prophet ﷺ said, “The best among people in recitation is the one who recites the Qur’ān and is moved to solemnity by it.” Reported from this route by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr (10852) and by Abū Nuʿaym in Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ (4/19); its chain is weak. Other routes exist, none of which is fully reliable (see our discussion in Tārīkh al-Khaṭīb 4/341) (al-Bashshār). 4. From Tawūs on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ: He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me wearing two saffron-yellow garments and asked, “Did your mother command you to wear these?” I replied, “Should I wash them?” He said, “Rather, burn them.” In some manuscripts the reading is “one of them” instead of “burn them,” a corruption; the correct reading is established in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. Muslim records it (2077) in the Book of Dress and Adornment: Chapter on forbidding men from wearing saffron-colored garments, on the authority of Dāwūd ibn Rushayd (in some manuscripts “ibn Rashīd,” a scribal error; the correct is established in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim), from ʿUmar ibn Ayyūb, from Ibrāhīm ibn Nāfiʿ, from Sulaymān al-Aḥwal, from Tawūs. 5. Muḥammad ibn Muslim reports from Ibrāhīm ibn Maysarah from Tawūs from Ibn ʿAmr that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The gilāwiza (plural of gilwāz, ‘policemen’), the ṣhuruṭ (guards), and the henchmen of the wrongdoers are the dogs of the Fire.” The manuscript reading “gilawidhah” with a dāl is a corruption; the correct form is established in the hadith classification works. This narration is unique to Muḥammad ibn Muslim al-Ṭāʾifī (some manuscripts read “al-Ṭāliqī,” a scribal error; the correct is confirmed in Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ 4/1, al-Ikmāl of Ibn Makūlah 1/294, and Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb p. 506). It is also found in al-Daylamī’s al-Firdaws (2/118 no. 2621) and in Abū Nuʿaym’s Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ (4/21), who calls it “strange from Tawūs, unique to Muḥammad ibn Muslim al-Ṭāʾifī from Ibrāhīm.” Al-Bashshār declares it fabricated, citing Ibn al-Jawzī’s al-Mawḍūʿāt (3/100). 6. Al-Ṭabarānī relates: “Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn (in some copies ‘ibn al-Ḥasan,’ a scribal error; he is known in the biographical sources as a teacher of al-Ṭabarānī), the al-Anmaṭī al-Baghdādī, narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn Idrīs narrated to us; my father narrated to us, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, from Tawūs, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, “O ʿAlī, gather up affinities among the believers, for how many affinities in this world are a blessing in the Hereafter.” ʿAlī then went and for a time did not meet anyone without taking him [as a companion].
