In al-Hilya (vol. 4, p. 4) and al-Mizzi’s Tahdhib al-Kamal (vol. 13, p. 362).
Imam Ahmad said: “ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrated to us, He said: My father told me: Tawus used to pray on a cold, overcast morning. Muhammad b. Yusuf, governor of Yemen and chamberlain—and brother of al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf—passed by while Tawus was in sujood (prostration). The emir was riding in his carriage. He ordered a luxurious brocade or thick carpet to be placed on Tawus while he was still prostrating. Tawus did not lift his head until he finished his need. When he stood up, he found the carpet upon him; he shook himself, threw it off, never looked at it again, and went home, leaving it lying on the ground.”
(Reported by al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal 13:361-362; also mentioned by al-Dhahabi in Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ 5:47.)
Nu‘aym b. Hammād said: “Sufyan b. ʿUyayna narrated to us — the statement in some manuscripts reads ‘Hammad b. ʿUyayna,’ but al-Hilya and the Rijāl literature confirm ‘Sufyan’ — from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAta’, from Tawus, from Ibn ʿAbbas, that: ‘Nothing a son of Adam utters is not recorded for him, even his groans in illness.’ When Imam Ahmad fell ill, someone told him: ‘Tawus disliked groaning during sickness,’ so he refrained.”
(Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:4 and by al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal 13:362.)
Abu Bakr b. Abi Shayba said: “Al-Faḍl b. Dakin narrated to us, Sufyan narrated from his father, from Dawud b. Shapur, who said: A man said to Tawus, ‘Pray for us.’ He replied, ‘I do not find fear in my heart to pray for you.’”
Ibn Ṭalut said: “Abd al-Salam b. Hashim narrated to us from al-Hasan b. al-Ḥusayn b. Abi al-Hurr al-Anbari — some manuscripts read simply al-Hasan b. Abi al-Ḥusayn, both of which are scribal errors; the correct reading is affirmed by Tahdhib al-Kamal and the Rijāl works — that: Tawus passed by trays on which heads were displayed, and he swooned. In another version: Whenever he saw roasted heads, he would forgo dinner that night.”
(Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:4; al-Dhahabi in Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ 5:40; and al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal 13:362.)
Imam Ahmad said: “Hashim b. al-Qasim narrated to us, al-Ashja‘i narrated from Sufyan al-Thawri, who said Tawus remarked: ‘The dead are tested in their graves with seven hardships, and it is recommended to feed on their behalf during those days.’”
(Reported by al-Suyuti in al-Dibaj 2:491, where it reads “in their graves with seven.”)
Ibn Idris said: “I heard Layth mention from Tawus—and speaking of women he said: ‘Among them are those who disbelieved in the past and those who will disbelieve in the future.’”
(Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:11; similarly by Ibn Abi Shayba in al-Musannaf 4:46 [no. 17643].)
Abu ʿAsim narrated from Zamʿa — some manuscripts read ‘from Salama b. Wahram,’ a scribal error confirmed and corrected by the disambiguations in Tahdhib al-Kamal (9:386; 11:328) — from Salama b. Wahram, from Tawus, who said: “They used to say: ‘Prostrate to the monkey in his time,’ meaning: obey him in what is right.”
(Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:11 and by al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal 13:367.)
Abu Bakr b. Abi Shayba (al-Musannaf 7:202, no. 35339) said: “Usama narrated to us, Nafiʿ b. ʿUmar narrated from Bishr b. ʿAsim, who said Tawus remarked: ‘I have never seen anyone as secure in himself as one man I once knew. If someone had asked me, “Who is the best person you know?” I would have named him, and I held that opinion for a time. Then, he was struck by pain in his abdomen; part of it emitted from his body, and he longed for it. I saw him in great distress, and I do not know which end suffered more, until he died of sweating.’”
(Also reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:12.)
Ahmad also narrated: “Hashim told us, Abu Bishr told us from Tawus that he saw young men of Quraysh walk with a swaying gait, and he said to them: ‘You wear a mode of dress your fathers did not wear, and you walk in a style that even the best gait trainers cannot teach.’”
(Reported by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:10, where it reads “they excel in dancing.”)
