And whoever increases ‘Zayd’ in his reward. (Narrated by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:6.)
Qutayba ibn Sa‘id said: “Sufyan ibn ‘Uyayna narrated to us from Hisham ibn Ḥujayr, from Tawus, who said: ‘A young man’s ritual devotion (nusuk) is not complete until he marries.’” (Narrated by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:6; Sa‘id ibn Manṣur in his Sunan 1:165 [497]; al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal 13:363.)
From Sufyan, from Ibrahim ibn Maisarah, who reported that Tawus said to him: “You must marry, or I will tell you what ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said to Abū al-Zawā’id: ‘What is preventing you from marrying except incapacity or debauchery?’” (Narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah in his Muṣannaf 3:453 [15910]; ʿAbd al-Razzāq in his Muṣannaf 6:170 [10384]; Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:6; also cited by Ibn Ḥajar in al-Iṣābah 7:157 in the biography of Abū al-Zawā’id al-Yamani.)
Tawus said: “Nothing safeguards a believer’s faith except his seclusion (ḥafrah).”
ʿAbd al-Razzāq related from Mu‘ammar—through Ibn Tawus or another source—that a man was walking with Tawus when they heard a crow caw. The man said, “Good!” Tawus replied, “What good or evil is in this? Do not accompany me or walk with me.” (Narrated by Mu‘ammar ibn Rashid in al-Jami‘ [Muṣannaf ʿAbd al-Razzāq] 10:406 [19513]; Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:4; al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal 13:362.)
Bishr ibn Musa reported: Al-Ḥumaydi told us, from Sufyan, from Ibn Tawus, from his father, who said: “When a person departs for the morning prayer, Satan follows him; upon returning home and greeting with salām, Satan retreats saying, ‘No resting place for me.’ If his breakfast arrives and he says the name of Allah over it, Satan says, ‘No meal or resting place for me.’ If he enters without greeting, Satan says, ‘We have gained the resting place.’ If his food arrives and he does not mention Allah, Satan says, ‘A resting place and a meal.’ The same occurs at the evening meal. He also said: ‘Angels record the prayer of the children of Adam—so-and-so increased in such and such, so-and-so decreased in such and such—referring to bowing, humility, and prostration.’” (Narrated by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:5; al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal 13:362–363.)
He said: “When the Fire was created, the hearts of the angels trembled; when Adam was created, they were stilled.” (Narrated by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:5; al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal 13:363.)
Whenever he heard thunder, he would say: “Glory be to Him for whom it glorifies itself.” (Narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah in his Muṣannaf 6:27; ʿAbd al-Razzāq in his Muṣannaf 11:89.)
Imam Ahmad reported: “Sufyan narrated from Ibn Abī Nujayḥ, who said: Mujahid said to Tawus, ‘O Abū ‘Abd al-Raḥmān, I saw you praying inside the Ka‘ba and the Prophet (peace be upon him) at its doorway said, “Remove your veil and show your recitation.” He replied, “Be silent; no one should hear this from you.” Then I imagined him continuing the conversation.’” (Narrated by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:5; al-Dārimī in his Sunan 1:106; al-Fākihī in Akhbār Makkah 2:320.)
In his book al-Zuhd (p. 35), Ahmad also recorded with this isnād: “Tawus said to Abū Nujayḥ, ‘O Abū Nujayḥ, whoever speaks while fearing Allah is better than one who remains silent while fearing Him.’” (Also narrated by Ibn al-Mubārak in al-Zuhd p. 289; Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya 4:5.)
Mas‘ar narrated from a man: “Tawus approached a man at dawn and they said he was asleep. He said, ‘I did not think anyone would sleep at dawn.’” (See above, p. 68.)
‘Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal reported: “Muḥammad ibn Yazīd told us, saying: The two sons of Mālik narrated from Mas‘ūd …” [citation incomplete].
Al-Thawrī said: “Tawus would remain at home; when this was mentioned, he said: ‘Regret for the imams and corruption among the people.’” (Narrated by Abu Nu‘aym … [incomplete]).
