Tabarani said: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; Abd al-Razzaq from Maʿmar; Maʿmar from Ibn Tawus; and Ibn Tawus from his father, who said: “There was, in bygone times, a man of sound mind and sharp wit. When he grew old he stayed home and one day said to his son, ‘I feel forlorn in this house—bring me men with whom I can speak.’ His son gathered a group and told them, ‘Enter and converse with my father; if you hear anything objectionable, excuse him, for he is aged; if you hear anything good, accept it.’ They entered, and the first thing he said was: ‘The most discerning of the discerning is taqwa (piety), and the weakest in weakness is fujur (wickedness). When a man marries, let him choose from a good stock. And if you perceive a man’s fajra (licentiousness), beware of him, for it has sisters.’” (Reported by Maʿmar ibn Rashid in al-Musannaf of Abd al-Razzaq, 11/455; by Abu Nuʿaym in al-Hilya, 4/8; and by al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal, 13/366.)
Salama ibn Shabib said: Ahmad ibn Nasr ibn Malik narrated to us; Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Muslim al-Jundi (miswritten in some sources as “Abdullah ibn Umar al-Jiyri” or “Abdullah ibn Umar al-Jizi,” both errors—see Tahdhib al-Kamal, 1/507; the biography of Amr ibn Muslim, 22/243; al-Ikmal by Ibn Makula, 2/220; and Taqrib al-Tahdhib, p. 427) narrated from his father who said: Tawus said to his son, “When you bury me, look into my grave: if you do not find me, praise Allah; if you do find me, then indeed to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.” Abdullah added, “One of his grandchildren told me that he looked and did not find him, yet a look of joy appeared on his face.” (Reported in Abu Nuʿaym’s al-Hilya, 4/9.)
Qubaysa said: Sufyan narrated from Saʿid ibn Muhammad, who reported that among Tawus’s supplications was: “O Allah, deprive me of abundant wealth and offspring, and grant me faith and righteous deeds.” (Mentioned by al-Dhahabi in Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubala, 5/42.)
Sufyan also reported from Maʿmar: al-Zuhri said, “If you had seen Tawus ibn Kaysan, you would know that he never lies.”
Awn ibn Salam said: Jabir ibn Mansur—brother of Ishaq ibn Mansur—al-Saluli narrated from Imran ibn Khalid al-Khuzaʿi, who said: “I was sitting with ʿAta’ when a man came and said, ‘Abu Muhammad, Tawus asserts that whoever prays ʿIsha and then offers two additional rakʿas—reciting in the first, “Alam tanzeel al-sajda” (Quran 32:15), and in the second, “Tabaraka alladhi bi yadihi al-mulk” (Quran 67:1)—will receive the reward equivalent to standing on Arafat and the Night of Decree.’ ʿAta’ replied, ‘Tawus speaks the truth; I have never abandoned those two units.’”
Ibn Abi al-Siri reported: [Abd al-Razzaq narrated from] Maʿmar from Ibn Tawus from his father, who related: “A man among Banu Isra’il treated the insane. A beautiful woman afflicted by madness was brought to him. Left in his care, she attracted his desire; he slept with her and she became pregnant. Then Satan said to him, ‘If this becomes known you will be disgraced—kill her and bury her in your house.’ He did so. Later her family came looking for her; he told them she had died. They did not suspect him because of his reputation for piety. Then Satan informed them, ‘She did not die; he impregnated her, killed her, and buried her in his house at such-and-such a spot.’ They demanded to know where and who was with him. They excavated his house and found her. They arrested and imprisoned him. Then Satan came to him and said, ‘I am your companion; if you want me to free you, disbelieve in Allah.’ He obeyed, disbelieved, and was executed, whereupon Satan disavowed him. Tawus commented, ‘I know of no one to whom the verse “The likeness of Satan when he says to man, “Disbelieve,” and when man disbelieves, he says, “I am free of you; I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds”’ (Quran 59:16) was revealed except about him and others like him.’” (Reported by Abu Nuʿaym in al-Hilya, 4/7; by al-Tabari in his Tafsir, 28/50; by al-Bayhaqi in Shuʿab al-Iman 4/372 [no. 5449]; and by al-Mizzi in Tahdhib al-Kamal, 13/364.)
Tabarani said: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; Abd al-Razzaq from Maʿmar; Maʿmar from Ibn Tawus; and Ibn Tawus from his father, who said: “A man of Banu Isra’il had four sons. When he fell ill, one declared, ‘Either you have someone treat our father and forfeit any share of his inheritance, or I will treat him on that condition.’ They tended him until he died and buried him, taking nothing of his estate. He was poor and had… [text continues].”
