Abu ‘Abd Allāh al-Shāmī reported: “I went to see Ṭawūs and asked permission. His son, an elderly sheikh, came out to me. I said, ‘Are you Ṭawūs?’ He replied, ‘No, I am his son.’ I retorted, ‘If you are his son, then the sheikh must be senile.’ He answered, ‘A true scholar never becomes senile.’ I then entered and Ṭawūs said, ‘Ask but be brief.’ I said, ‘If you bid me to be concise, I will, but do you wish me to gather here the Tawrah (Torah), the Injīl (Gospel), and al-Furqān (the Criterion)?’ He replied, ‘Fear Allāh with a fear than which nothing should be more fearful to you; place your hope in Him with a hope stronger than your fear of Him; and love for others what you love for yourself.’ (Abū Nu‘aym, al-Ḥilya 4:11). Al-Ṭabarānī narrated on the authority of Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm, from ‘Abd al-Razāq via Ma‘mar, from Ibn Ṭawūs, from his father, that he said: “On the Day of Resurrection wealth and its owner will be brought forth to dispute. The owner will say to his money, ‘I collected you on such-and-such a day, in such-and-such a month, in such-and-such a year.’ The money will reply, ‘Did I not fulfill your needs? I am the one who prevented you from doing what Allāh commanded you—out of your love for me.’ The owner will say, ‘These ropes I now tie around myself.’ The money will answer, ‘I am the one who prevented you from performing what Allah ordered regarding me.’” (Abū Nu‘aym, al-Ḥilya 4:10; al-Mizzī, Tahdhīb al-Kamāl 13:367). ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shayba related from his father, from Yaḥyā ibn al-Ḍurays, from Abū Sinān, from Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, that he said: “Five sat with me—never have five like them gathered before: ‘Aṭā’, Ṭawūs, Mujāhid, Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr, and ‘Ikrima. Then Mujāhid and Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr arrived and began teaching Qur’ānic exegesis to ‘Ikrima. They were asked about every verse and gave him its interpretation. When they had exhausted what they knew, he said, ‘A verse was revealed such-and-such in such-and-such a place, and another such-and-such in such-and-such a place.’ Then they went to the bathhouse at night.” (al-Mizzī, Tahdhīb al-Kamāl 20:273). Sufyān said: “I asked ‘Ubayd Allāh ibn Abī Yazīd, ‘With whom did you sit to study Ibn ‘Abbās?’ He replied, ‘With ʿAṭā’ and the common people. Ṭawūs used to sit only with the select.’” (Ibn Sa‘d, al-Ṭabaqāt 5:481; Ibn Aḥmad al-ʿUlaymī, Al-‘Ilal 3:139; al-Rāmahurmuzī, al-Muḥaddith al-Fāṣil 569; Abū Nu‘aym, al-Ḥilya 4:9). Ḥabīb said: “Ṭawūs told me, ‘If I relate to you a report that I have established, do not ask anyone else about it.’” (Ibn Sa‘d, al-Ṭabaqāt 2:386; Abū Nu‘aym, al-Ḥilya 4:9). Abū Usāma reported from al-A‘mash, from ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Maysarah, from Ṭawūs: “I met fifty of the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him).” (Imām Aḥmad, Faḍā’il al-Ṣaḥāba 2:982; Abū Nu‘aym, al-Ḥilya 4:10). Imām Aḥmad also transmitted from ‘Abd al-Razāq, from Ma‘mar, that Ibn Ṭawūs said: “I told my father, ‘I want to marry so-and-so.’ He replied, ‘Go and see her.’ So I dressed in my best clothes, washed and anointed myself. When he saw me, he said, ‘Sit down; do not go.’” (Abū Nu‘aym, al-Ḥilya 4:10). ‘Abd Allāh ibn Ṭawūs said: “Whenever my father set out for Mecca, he would travel for a month; when he returned, he would take a month. I mentioned this to him, and he replied, ‘I have heard that whoever departs in obedience to Allāh remains on His path until he returns to his family.’” (Abū Nu‘aym, al-Ḥilya 4:10). Ḥamza reported from Hilāl ibn Ka‘b that “Whenever Ṭawūs left Yemen, he drank only from those ancient pre-Islamic wells.” (Imām Aḥmad, al-Wara‘ 28; Abū Nu‘aym, al-Ḥilya 4:10). A man said to him, “Pray for me.” He replied, “Pray for yourself, for Allāh answers the call of the one in true need.” (al-Khaṭīb, Talkhīṣ al-Mutashābih 1:220; Ibn al-Jawzī, Ṣifat al-Ṣafwa 2:289).
