We have placed here in the margin: [Abu Amr al-Faqih—one of the jurists (fuqaha) and scholars, who narrated from his father and others. He was known for his devout worship and asceticism. When Hisham ibn ‘Abd al-Malik performed the Hajj, he entered the Ka‘ba and found Salim ibn ‘Abdullah inside. He said, “Salim, ask me for a need.” Salim replied, “I am too shy before God to ask anyone for something in His House.” After Salim emerged, Hisham followed him and said, “Now that you have left the House of God, ask me for a need.” Salim asked, “For worldly needs or for the hereafter?” Hisham answered, “For worldly needs.” Salim said, “I have never asked this world from one who possesses it; how can I ask it from one who does not?” (Al-Dhahabi, Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’, 4/466). Salim himself lived a rough, simple life: he wore coarse wool, worked the land with his own hands (as well as other manual labor), would accept nothing from the caliphs, was extremely humble, and was notable for his emaciation, asceticism, and piety.] (1) His biography appears in: Tabaqat Ibn Sa‘d (5/537); Tarikh Khalifa, p. 336; Tabaqat Khalifa, p. 287; Az-Zuhd of Ahmad ibn Hanbal, p. 375; al-Tarikh al-Kabir (4/365); al-Ma‘arif (p. 455); al-Ma‘rifa wa-t-Tarikh (1/15); al-Jarh wa-l-Ta‘dil (4/500); al-Thiqat of Ibn Hibban (4/391); Hilyat al-Awliya’ (4/3); Sifat al-Safwa (2/284); Wafayat al-A‘yan (2/509); Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ (5/38); Tadhkirat al-Huffaz (1/90); al-Wafi bil-Wafayat (16/t. 451); al-‘Aqd al-Thamin (5/58). What follows was originally interjected into the main text in (Q), so we have placed it here in the margin: [End of insertion. We have added the following beneficial supplement to the biography of Salim ibn ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab. As for Tawus, he is Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman Tawus ibn Kaysan al-Yamani, the earliest of the people of Yemen among the Tabi‘in. He belonged to the Persian contingent sent by Kisra to Yemen. Tawus met and narrated from a group of Companions. He was among the foremost imams, combining devout worship, asceticism, beneficial knowledge, and righteous deeds. He met fifty Companions and transmitted mostly from Ibn ‘Abbas. Many prominent Tabi‘in narrated from him, including Mujahid, ‘Ata’ ibn Abi Rabah, ‘Amr ibn Dinar, Ibrahim ibn Maisara, Abu al-Zubayr, Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, al-Zuhri, Habib ibn Abi Thabit, Layth ibn Abi Sulaym, al-Dhahak ibn Muzahim, ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Maisara, ‘Abd al-Karim ibn al-Mukhariq, Wahb ibn Munabbih, al-Mughira ibn Hakim al-Sana‘ani, ‘Abdallah ibn Tawus, and others. Tawus died in Mecca during the pilgrimage. Caliph Hisham ibn ‘Abd al-Malik led the funeral prayer over him, and he was buried there (may God have mercy on him). Imam Ahmad related: “Abd al-Razzaq narrated that his father said: ‘Tawus died in Mecca but they did not perform the funeral prayer until Hisham sent his son with the guards. I saw ‘Abdullah ibn al-Hasan carrying the bier on his shoulders; a cap that was on it fell off, and his garment was torn from behind’”—a testament to the crowd that attended him. For the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Faith is Yemeni” (al-Bukhari 4389, Muslim 52). Many from Yemen were known for their knowledge and piety, among them Abu Muslim, Abu Idris, Wahb, Ka‘b, Tawus, and others. Dhamra narrated from Ibn Shawdhub: “I attended Tawus’s funeral in Mecca in the year 105 AH. The people were saying, ‘May God have mercy on Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman; he performed forty pilgrimages’” (Abu Nu‘aym, Hilyat al-Awliya’, 4/3; Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr, at-Tamhid, 12/192). Abd al-Razzaq also reported from his father that Tawus died at al-Muzdalifa—or in Mina—while on pilgrimage, and when his bier was carried...
