[Then the year one hundred and five began]
During it, al-Jarrah ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Hakami campaigned against the land of the Alans (1); he captured numerous fortresses and wide-ranging districts beyond Balanjar, secured abundant spoils, and took many captives from among the sons of the Turks.
In the same year Muslim ibn Saʿid advanced against the Turks. He besieged a great city in the territory of the Ṣughd, whose king concluded a treaty with him, agreeing to pay a large sum of money.
That year Saʿid ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwan also raided the Byzantine lands. He dispatched a vanguard of one thousand horsemen, and they were all wiped out.
With five days remaining in Shaʿban of that year, the Commander of the Faithful Yazid ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwan died at Arbad (2) in the region of al-Balqa. His death occurred on a Friday, and his age was between thirty and forty years.
This is his biographical notice:
[Yazid ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwan] (3)
He is Yazid ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwan ibn al-Hakam ibn Abi al-ʿAs ibn Umayya ibn ʿAbd Shams ibn ʿAbd Manaf, Abu Khalid, the Umayyad Qurashi, Commander of the Faithful. His mother was ʿAtika bint Yazid ibn Muʿawiya; it is said that she was buried in the Grave of ʿAtika, and the district was consequently named after her. Allah knows best.
He was pledged allegiance as caliph after ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz in Rajab of the year 101 AH, in accordance with the testament of his brother Sulayman that he should succeed ʿUmar (4) ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz (may Allah have mercy upon him). This occurred on a Friday with five days of Rajab remaining.
Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Dhulali said: “Kuthayyir ibn Hisham related to us; Jaʿfar ibn Burqan related to us; al-Zuhri told me: ‘In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as well as Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthman, and ʿAli, a Muslim did not inherit from an unbeliever, nor an unbeliever from a Muslim. When Muʿawiya assumed the caliphate he allowed a Muslim to inherit from an unbeliever but did not allow an unbeliever to inherit from a Muslim, and the caliphs after him followed that practice. When ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz came to power he reverted to the original sunnah, and he was followed in that by Yazid ibn…’”} }
