Egypt, but Sulaymān would not permit him. Shortly afterward he sent for him, made amends, and said, “No matter ever presents itself to me without you coming to mind.” (1)
We have already mentioned (2) that when death approached Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik he entrusted the caliphate to ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and so affairs were duly settled—praise be to Allah.
Section: Prophecies that had long been awaited in the transmitted reports (3)
Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Salamah al-Mājishūn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār narrated to us; he said: Ibn ʿUmar declared, “How astonishing! People claim that the world will not end until a man from the house of ʿUmar assumes authority and conducts himself as ʿUmar did.” He added, “They used to think it was Bilāl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar—he had a visible mark on his face—but it was not he. In fact it proved to be ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, whose mother was the daughter of ʿĀṣim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb.” (4)
Al-Bayhaqī said (5): al-Ḥākim informed us; Abū Ḥāmid Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Muqriʾ informed us; Abū ʿĪsā al-Tirmidhī narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; ʿAffān narrated to us; ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Lāḥiq narrated to us, from Juwayriyyah ibn Asmāʾ, from Nāfiʿ, who said: “It has reached us that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: ‘Among my offspring there will be a man with a blemish on his face who will assume authority and fill the earth with justice.’” Nāfiʿ added on his own, “I believe him to be none other than ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.”
Mubārak ibn Faḍālah transmitted from ʿUbayd Allāh, from Nāfiʿ, who said: Ibn ʿUmar used to say, “Would that I knew who this descendant of ʿUmar is—the one with a mark on his face who will fill the earth with justice!” (6)
Wahīb ibn al-Ward said: “While I was asleep I saw as though a man entered through the Gate of Banū Shaybah, calling out, ‘O people! The Book of Allah has taken charge over you.’ I asked, ‘Who is he?’ He gestured toward his back, and behold, the letters ʿ-M-R were written upon it. Thereafter the pledge of allegiance was given to ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.” (7)
He also said: Baqiyyah narrated from ʿĪsā ibn Abī Razīn: al-Khuzāʿī told me, from ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, that he saw the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—
