He also heard from ʿAbd Allah ibn Busr. Some maintain that he met Abū al-Dardāʾ, but the sound view is that his reports from both Abū al-Dardāʾ and Ḥudhayfah are mursal. A number of people from his own town narrated from him, and Ibn Maʿīn and others declared him trustworthy.
Among the strangest things related from him is the report transmitted by Qutaybah:
Qutaybah said, “Shihāb ibn Khirāsh told us, from Ḥumayd, from Abū al-Zāhiriyyah, who said:
‘I nodded off inside the Rock of Bayt al-Maqdis. The custodians came and locked the door on me. I did not awaken except to the angels glorifying Allah; I leapt up in alarm, and there were the angels standing in rows, so I joined them in their ranks (1).’”
Abū ʿUbaydah and others said that he died in the year 100 AH.
Abū al-Ṭufayl (2) ʿĀmir ibn Wāthilah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr al-Laythī al-Kinānī was a Companion—by unanimous agreement the last person to die who had seen the Prophet ﷺ.
He related that he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ touch the Black Corner with his mahjan (crooked staff) (3), and he described the Prophet’s appearance. He also narrated from Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿAlī, Muʿādh, and Ibn Masʿūd. Transmitters from him include al-Zuhrī, Qatādah, ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, Abū al-Zubayr, and many other Successors.
Abū al-Ṭufayl was a supporter of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib and fought alongside him in all his battles. Some nevertheless reproached him for his association with al-Mukhtār ibn Abī ʿUbayd, and it is said that he carried al-Mukhtār’s banner.
It is related that he once entered upon Muʿāwiyah, who asked him, “Has the passage of time lessened your grief over ʿAlī?” He replied, “It is like the bereavement of a sorrowful old woman and a childless elderly man.” Muʿāwiyah then said, “And how strong is your love for him?” He answered, “Like the love of Moses’ mother for Moses; and to Allah I complain of my shortcomings (4).”
