ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah (1). Their full biographical entries have been given in al-Takmīl, and Allah—glorified and exalted—is the All-Knowing (2).
[Then came the year 99 AH]
During it Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, the Commander of the Believers, passed away on a Friday when ten days of Ṣafar had elapsed—though some say when ten days remained of that month—at the age of forty-five; others say forty-three; still others maintain he had not yet reached forty. His caliphate lasted two years and eight months.
Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim, however, claimed that he died on a Friday with thirteen days left of Ramaḍān that year; that his reign had reached three years, three months, and five days; and that he was thirty-nine years old. The sound view is that of the majority—the first opinion—and Allah knows best.
He was Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik (3) ibn Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ ibn Umayyah ibn ʿAbd Shams, the Qurashī Umayyad, kunya Abū Ayyūb. He was born in Madinah among Banū Jadīlah and was raised in Syria alongside his father.
He transmitted a hadith from his father, from his grandfather, from ʿĀʾishah, Mother of the Believers, concerning the incident of the Slander; Ibn ʿAsākir (4) recorded it through the narration of his son ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Sulaymān.
He also related—on the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Hanīdah—that he accompanied ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar to al-Ghābah. The narrator said: Ibn ʿUmar fell silent, then turned to me and asked, “What is troubling you?” I replied, “I was making a wish.” Ibn ʿUmar said, “What do you wish for, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān?” He answered me, “Were all of Mount Uḥud here gold and I knew its exact amount so that I could pay its zakāt, I would not dislike that,” or he said, “nor would I fear that it would harm me.” (5) This was transmitted by Muḥammad ibn
