He was also one of the refined and intelligent members of Banū Hāshim, yet he left no descendants.
Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī and others said, “He was the first person to speak about irjāʼ (postponing judgment), and he even wrote a treatise on the subject, but later regretted it.” (1)
Others reported: “He would suspend judgment concerning ʿUthmān, ʿAlī, Ṭalḥah, and al-Zubayr; he neither declared loyalty to them nor disparaged them. When this reached his father, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah, he struck him, causing a wound, and exclaimed, ‘Woe to you! Will you not show allegiance to your father ʿAlī?’ ” (2)
Abū ʿUbayd said, “He died in the year 95 AH.”
Khalīfah said, “He died during the days of ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—and Allah knows best.”
Humayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (3) ibn ʿAwf al-Zuhrī [whose mother was Umm Kulthūm bint ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿayṭ, the maternal half-sister of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān. Humayd was an eminent jurist and scholar, renowned for his many narrations] (4).
Also in this year died Muṭarrif ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Shikhkhīr (5). All of these figures have individual biographies in our book “al-Takmīl.” (6)
In the same year al-Ḥajjāj died in Wāsiṭ, as has already been discussed in full—praise be to Allah.
It was likewise the year in which Saʿīd ibn Jubayr was killed according to ʿAlī ibn al-Madāʾinī and others, though the well-known view is that his death occurred in 94 AH, as stated by Ibn Jarīr (7) and a number of scholars—and Allah knows best.
