The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, “Ṭā Sīn,” and when he reached the account of Moses he said:
“Indeed Moses, upon him be peace, hired himself out for eight or ten years (1) so as to guard his chastity and secure food for his stomach. (2)”
This chain, however, is not sound, for Maslamah ibn ʿAlī al-Khashanī, the Damascene al-Balāṭī, (3) is weak according to the leading ḥadīth critics, and a report transmitted by him alone is not relied upon. (4) It has nonetheless come down through another route.
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said:
“Abū Zurʿah related to us; Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bukayr related to us; Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to me.” (ḥ) (5)
He also said: “Abū Zurʿah related to us; Ṣafwān related to us; al-Walīd related to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Lahīʿah—from al-Ḥārith ibn Yazīd al-Ḥaḍramī—from ʿUlayy ibn Rabāḥ al-Lakhmī—who said:
‘I heard ʿUtbah ibn al-Naddhar al-Sulamī, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, relate that the Messenger of Allah said:
“Indeed Moses, upon him be peace, hired himself out in order to safeguard his chastity and to obtain food for his stomach.” (6)’ ”
Then the Most High said: “That is between me and you; whichever of the two terms I fulfill, let there be no injustice to me. And Allah is Guardian over what we say” (al-Qaṣaṣ 28:28).
Meaning: Moses said to his father-in-law, “The matter stands as you have stated; whichever of the two terms I complete (7) there must be no wrongdoing against me. Allah hears, witnesses, and is a trustee over what we say, upon both you and me.” Yet Moses did not settle for less than the fuller and more complete term—ten full, entire years.
Al-Bukhārī said:
“Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm related to us; Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān related to us; Marwān ibn Shujāʿ—from Sālim al-Afṭas—from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr—who said:
A Jew from al-Ḥīrah asked me, ‘Which of the two terms did Moses fulfill?’
I replied, ‘I do not know until I meet the scholar of the Arabs and ask him.’ So I travelled, met Ibn ʿAbbās, and asked him.
He said, ‘He fulfilled the longer and the better of the two; for when the Messenger of Allah declares something, he acts upon it.’ (8)
This wording is cited only by al-Bukhārī through this chain.
