—numerous narrations from a number of the Companions, and his learning was expansive. He passed away in Madinah (1).
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿĀʾidh al-Azdī (2) left behind many narrations and was a scholar of note. He authored numerous volumes, transmitted from several Companions, and was taken prisoner on the day of the Ibn al-Ashʿath uprising, but al-Ḥajjāj later released him.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muʿāwiyah (3) ibn Ḥudayj (4) served as the judge of Egypt under ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Marwān and as the head of his police force. He was a virtuous scholar and transmitter of hadith; a number of authorities narrated from him (5).
[Then came the year 95 AH.]
In that year al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd campaigned in Byzantine lands and captured many fortresses.
That same year Maslamah ibn ʿAbd al-Malik conquered the city of al-Bāb in Armenia, demolished it, and rebuilt it nine years later (6).
In it as well, Muḥammad ibn al-Qāsim took the city of Multan in the land of India, seizing vast riches from it.
In that year Mūsā ibn Nuṣayr returned from al-Andalus to Ifrīqiyah with such an abundance of wealth that it had to be hurriedly transported on beasts of burden, and he brought with him thirty thousand captives (7).
During the same year Qutaybah ibn Muslim campaigned in the region of ash-Shāsh [capturing many cities and provinces]; while he was there (8), news reached him.
