and Abū al-ʿĀliyah al-Riyāḥī (1).
Sinān ibn Salamah ibn al-Muḥabbiq (2), one of the renowned champions: he embraced Islam on the Day of the Conquest, led the expedition to India, and lived to a great age.
Also dying in this same year was Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Thaqafī (3), the brother of al-Ḥajjāj. He had been governor of Yemen and used to revile ʿAlī from the pulpits. It is reported that he once ordered Ḥajar al-Madrī to curse ʿAlī, whereupon the latter replied, “Rather, may Allah curse whoever curses ʿAlī, and may the curse of Allah be upon whomever Allah has cursed.” (4) Others say that Muḥammad only employed equivocation in his cursing; Allah knows best.
