ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAdī ⦗1⦘ ibn al-Khiyār lived during the lifetime of the Prophet—Allah bless him and grant him peace—and related hadith from a number of Companions; his father ʿAdī was one of those slain at Badr as an unbeliever.
ʿAbd Allah ibn Qays ibn Makhramah ⦗2⦘ was the judge of Madina and ranked among Quraysh’s jurists and scholars.
Also passing away there in this same year was Marthad ibn ʿAbd Allah ⦗3⦘, Abū al-Khayr al-Yazani ⦗4⦘.
In this year a number of Qur’an reciters and scholars who had sided with Ibn al-Ashʿath were lost: some fled, others were killed in the battle; some were taken prisoner and al-Ḥajjāj beheaded them, while still others he tracked down and killed later. Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ ⦗5⦘ names among those notable figures: Muslim ibn Yasār al-Muzani; Abū Marānah al-ʿAjlī—killed; ʿUqbāh ibn ʿAbd al-Ghāfir—killed; ʿUqbāh ibn Wisāj ⦗6⦘—killed; ʿAbd Allah ibn Ghālib ⦗7⦘ al-Jahḍamī—killed; Abū al-Jawzāʾ al-Rabʿī—killed; al-Naḍr ibn Anas; ʿImrān, the father of Abū Jamrah al-Ḍubʿī; Abū al-Minhāl Siyar ibn Salāmah al-Riyāhī; Mālik ibn Dīnār; Mirrah ibn Dabbāb ⦗8⦘ al-Hadādī; Abū Nujayd al-Jahḍamī; Abū Shaykh ⦗9⦘ al-Hanāʾī; Saʿīd ibn Abī al-Hasan; and his brother al-Hasan al-Baṣrī.

(4) The above five biographies are omitted in manuscripts A and B.
(5) al-Khalīfa, pp. 286–287.
(6) In both manuscript A and the printed edition the name appears as “Wushāḥ”; our reading conforms to al-Khalīfa and al-Dhahabī’s Tārīkh al-Islām.
(7) In the printed edition the name appears as “Khālid,” which is a corruption.
(8) In both manuscript A and the printed edition the name appears as “Dhiyāb”; this is incorrect. The correct reading, according to al-Dhahabī’s al-Mushabbih (1:282), is Murra b. Dibbāb al-Baṣrī. See al-Dhahabī, Tawḍīḥ al-Mushabbih, 4:15.
(9) In the printed edition the name appears as “Sabīj”; our reading is confirmed by manuscript M, al-Khalīfa and al-Dhahabī’s Tārīkh al-Islām.
