He transmitted a large number of hadith. He was present at the Pledge of al-ʿAqabah and wished to fight at Uhud, but his father kept him back and left him to look after his nine sisters. It is also said that he lost his sight before he died. Jābir passed away in Madinah at the age of ninety-four, and 1,540 hadith are attributed to him.
Shurayḥ ibn al-Hārith (1) ibn Qays ibn al-Jahm al-Kindī was the qadi of Kufah. He was appointed judge by ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb, ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib; ʿAlī later dismissed him, after which Muʿāwiyah reinstated him. Thereafter he continued to judge independently until he died in this same year. His monthly stipend for the judiciary was 100 dirhams—some say 500.
Whenever he set out to hold court he would say,
“Soon the wrongdoer will know the share he has diminished.”
It is further related that when he sat to judge he would recite the verse,
“O David, indeed We have made you a vicegerent on earth, so judge between the people with truth and do not follow desire… ” (Saad 38:26).
He also used to say,
“The oppressor is waiting for punishment, while the oppressed is waiting for victory.”
Some report that he served as qadi for roughly seventy years (2); others say he asked to be relieved of the post one year before his death—Allah knows best.
He was descended from Persian children who had settled in Yemen, and he came to Madinah after the death of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
He died in Kufah at the age of one hundred and eight.
Al-Ṭabarānī narrated: ‘ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz told us; ʿĀrim Abū al-Nuʿmān told us; Ḥammād ibn Zayd told us, from Shuʿayb ibn al-Ḥabḥāb, from Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, who said:
“Shurayḥ used to say, ‘Soon the wrongdoers will know the right of those they have deprived. The oppressor is waiting for punishment, and the oppressed is waiting for victory.’”
Imām Aḥmad transmitted the same report through Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUlayyah, from Ibn ʿAwn, from Ibrāhīm.
