and the fourth to ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr.
The first to depart with his banner was Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, followed by Najda, then the Umayyads; thereafter Ibn al-Zubayr set out, and the people moved on with him. Among those waiting for Ibn al-Zubayr to depart was ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar, but the latter’s departure was delayed. Ibn ʿUmar remarked, “His delay is reminiscent of the departure of the Jāhiliyyah.” He then departed himself, after which Ibn al-Zubayr departed, and the people kept apart that year, so no fighting took place among them.
Under Ibn al-Zubayr, the deputy governor of Medina was Jābir ibn al-Aswad ibn ʿAwf al-Zuhrī; his brother Muṣʿab governed Kūfa and Basra, while ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān held Syria and Egypt. Allah knows best.
