Both Ibn Abī Ḥātim and Ibn Jarīr relate:
Yūnus narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Aʿlā; Ibn Wahb informed us; Nāfiʿ ibn Yazīd told me, from ʿUqayl, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas ibn Mālik, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“The Prophet of Allah, Job, remained in his ordeal for eighteen years. All his relatives and acquaintances abandoned him, save for two brothers—his closest companions—who would visit him morning and evening.
One of them said to the other, ‘By Allah, Job must have committed a sin that no one among humankind has ever committed.’
His companion asked, ‘What sin is that?’
He replied, ‘For eighteen years his Lord has shown him no mercy by removing his affliction.’
When they came to Job, the man could not keep from repeating those words. Job said, ‘I do not know what you are talking about. What I do know is that Allah is aware that whenever I passed by two men arguing and invoking His name, I would return home and offer expiation on their behalf, disliking that Allah be mentioned except in truth.’
Job used to go out to relieve himself; when he was finished, his wife would lead him back by the hand. One day she was late in coming to him. While he was still in that spot, Allah revealed to him, ‘Stamp your foot—here is cool water for you to wash in and drink from’ (Ṣād 38:42).
Because he delayed, his wife went out in search of him. She met him as Allah had removed every trace of the affliction and restored him to better health than he had ever known. When she saw him she said, ‘May Allah bless you! Have you seen the Prophet of Allah, the afflicted man? By Allah, I have never seen anyone resemble him as you do when he was healthy.’
He replied, ‘I am he.’
He had two granaries, one for wheat and one for barley. Allah sent two clouds: the one that hovered over the wheat granary poured down gold until it overflowed, and the other poured silver into the barley granary until it overflowed.”
This is Ibn Jarīr’s wording (1). Ibn Ḥibbān likewise recorded it in full in his Ṣaḥīḥ (2) through the chain of Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Qutaybah, from Ḥarmalah, from Ibn Wahb. Raising it to the Prophet in this form is exceedingly rare; it is more likely to be a report halted short of the Prophet.
Ibn Abī Ḥātim also said (3): My father narrated to us; Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Ḥammād narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Zayd informed us, from Yūsuf ibn Mihrān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“Allah clothed him in a garment from Paradise. Job stepped aside and sat down, and his wife came but did not recognize him. She said, ‘Servant of Allah, the afflicted man who used to be here—perhaps the dogs or the wolves have carried him off?’ She spoke with him for some time.
He said, ‘Perhaps I am Job.’
She said, ‘Servant of Allah, are you mocking me?’
He replied, ‘Woe to you! I am Job; Allah has restored my body to me.’
Ibn ʿAbbās added: Allah returned to him his wealth and his children themselves, and their like along with them (4).
Wahb ibn Munabbih said: Allah revealed to him, ‘I have restored to you your family and your wealth, and the like of them in addition; so wash with this water…’
