—and it was also said that the killer was Khalliyy ibn Dāwūd, the grandfather of Khālid ibn Khalīyy.
His daughter Ḥamīdah bint al-Nuʿmān mourned him, saying:
Would that Ibn Muznah and his son
Had stood between you and the fatal blow;
And that every man of Banū Umayyah
Were wiped away till none remained.
The courier came with news of your death—
Ah, those howling dogs!
They seek victory with your severed head,
Yet soon the wheel will turn upon them again.
I shall weep for you in secret,
And I shall weep for you in public;
I shall weep for you as long as I live,
Together with the prowling beasts. (1)
It is also related that al-Aʿshā of Hamdān (2) came to al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr while he was in Ḥimṣ and ill. Al-Nuʿmān asked, “What has brought you here?” He replied, “I have come so that you may maintain ties with me, safeguard our kinship, and discharge my debt.” Al-Nuʿmān said, “By Allah, I have nothing, but I shall ask them on your behalf for something.” He then rose, ascended the pulpit, and proclaimed, “O people of Ḥimṣ! This man is your cousin from Iraq, and he seeks your help—what do you say?” They answered, “Dispose of our wealth as you wish.” He refused to take from them indiscriminately, so they said, “We have agreed to give two dinars from the wealth of each man.” There were twenty thousand men on the army register, and al-Nuʿmān immediately advanced him, from the public treasury, forty thousand dinars. When their stipends were later disbursed, he deducted two dinars from each man’s pay. (3)
Among the sayings of al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr (may Allah be pleased with him) is: “Utter ruin—complete ruin—is to commit sins in times of tribulation.”
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān reported: Abū al-Yamān narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from Abū Rawāḥah Yazīd ibn Ayyahm, from al-Haytham ibn Mālik al-Ṭāʾī, who said: I heard al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr on the pulpit say, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
‘Satan has ambushes and snares, and among his ambushes and snares are exulting in Allah’s favors, boasting of Allah’s gifts, arrogance toward the servants of Allah, and following capricious desire in matters other than those that please Allah.’” (4)
