Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā said: Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb narrated to us; al-Faḍl ibn Dukayn narrated to us; Kāmil Abū al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to us; I heard Abū Ṣāliḥ, who said: I heard Abū Hurayrah say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Seek refuge with Allah from the year seventy and from the rule of youngsters.” ⦗1⦘
Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār transmitted—through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Saʿīd ibn Zayd ibn ʿAmr ibn Nufayl—that he recited the following verse about Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah:
You are no kin of ours, nor is your uncle one of us…
O you who squander the prayer for the sake of desires. ⦗2⦘
He added: Some people claim that these lines belong to Mūsā ibn Yasār, who was nicknamed Mūsā Shahawāt.
It is also related from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr that he once heard one of his slave-girls singing that couplet. He struck her and said, “Recite instead:
You are of us, whereas your uncle is not of us…
O you who squander the prayer for the sake of desires.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā further said: al-Ḥakam ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ḥamzah narrated to us; from Hishām ibn al-Ghāz; from Makḥūl; from Abū ʿUbaydah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The affairs of my ummah will remain firmly established upon justice until they are chipped away by a man from Banū Umayyah (the Umayyad clan) named Yazīd.”
This chain is broken between Makḥūl and Abū ʿUbaydah; indeed, it is muʿḍal.
Ibn ʿAsākir likewise reported it through Ṣadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Dimashqī, from Hishām ibn al-Ghāz, from Makḥūl, from Abū Thaʿlabah al-Khushanī, from Abū ʿUbaydah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said:
“The matter of this ummah will continue upright upon justice until the first to fracture it is a man from Banū Umayyah called Yazīd.”
He then commented: This chain is also broken between Makḥūl and Abū Thaʿlabah.
Abū Yaʿlā said: ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Muʿāwiyah ibn Hishām narrated to us; from Sufyān; from ʿAwf; from Khālid ibn Abī al-Muhājir; from Abū al-ʿĀliyah, who said: We were with Abū Dharr in Syria when he said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
‘The first person to alter my sunnah will be a man from Banū Umayyah.’”
Ibn Khuzaymah transmitted it through Bundār, from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAbd al-Majīd, from ʿAwf: “Muhājir ibn Abī Mukhlad narrated to us; Abū al-ʿĀliyah narrated to me; Abū Muslim narrated to me; from Abū Dharr”—and he reported something similar.
That narration includes the following story: Abū Dharr was on a campaign under the command of Yazīd ibn Abī Sufyān. Yazīd had seized a slave-girl belonging to one of the men. The man sought Abū Dharr’s help to have her returned. Abū Dharr ordered Yazīd to give her back, but he hesitated. Abū Dharr then reminded him of the ḥadīth, whereupon he returned her. Yazīd asked Abū Dharr, “I adjure you by Allah—was it me whom he meant?” He replied, “No.”
