This is the biographical entry for Yazid ibn Muʿawiyah (1)
He is Yazid ibn Muʿawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, Sakhr (2) ibn Ḥarb ibn Umayyah ibn ʿAbd Shams, Commander of the Believers, Abū Khālid al-Umawī. He was born in the year 25—or 26, or 27—AH. During his father’s lifetime he was given the oath of allegiance as heir-apparent, and after his father’s death, on the fifteenth of Rajab 60 AH, that pledge was reaffirmed. He remained caliph until he died on the fourteenth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal 64 AH.
His mother was Maysūn bint Bahdal (3) ibn Unayf ibn Duljah ibn Qunāfah (4) ibn ʿAdiyy ibn Zuhayr ibn Ḥārithah al-Kalbī.
He narrated from his father, Muʿawiyah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whomever Allah intends good for, He grants him understanding of the religion.” (5) He also transmitted another ḥadīth on ablution.
Narrations from him were related by his son Khālid and by ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān.
Abū Zurʿah al-Dimashqī listed him in the tier immediately after the Companions—the highest level of Successors—and said, “He has ḥadīths.”
Physically he was heavy-set, large-boned, very hairy, handsome, tall, broad of head, with clearly defined yet thick fingers, and he bore the marks of smallpox.
His father divorced his mother while she was pregnant with him. During the pregnancy she dreamt that a moon emerged from her womb. When she told her mother, the latter said, “If your vision is true, you will bear a child for whom people will pledge allegiance to the caliphate.”
One day his mother Maysūn was combing his hair while he was still a small boy, and his father was with his favorite wife in the upper chamber—namely Fākhitah bint Qarazah. When Maysūn finished grooming him she gazed at him admiringly and kissed him between the eyes, whereupon Muʿāwiyah said:
