Al-Tirmidhi likewise related it (1) through Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj with the same chain, and he said, “It is ḥasan gharīb by way of Anas.”
Imam Ahmad (2) said: Aswad ibn ‘Amir and ‘Affan narrated to us, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ‘Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud‘ān, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pass by the house of Fāṭimah for six months in succession whenever he went out to the dawn prayer and would call out, “Prayer, O People of the Household! ‘Indeed, Allah only desires to remove impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you completely’” (al-Aḥzāb 33).
Al-Tirmidhi (3) also transmitted it from ‘Abd ibn Ḥumayd, from ‘Affan, with the same chain, and said, “It is gharīb; we know it only through the narration of Ḥammād ibn Salamah.”
Al-Tirmidhi (4) further said: Maḥmūd ibn Ghailān narrated to us; Abu Usāmah narrated to us, from Fuḍayl ibn Marzūq, from ‘Adi ibn (5) Thābit, from al-Barā’: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw Ḥasan and Ḥusayn and said, ‘O Allah, I love them, so love them.’” He then commented, “It is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.”
Imam Ahmad has also narrated—through Zayd ibn al-Ḥubāb, from al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid—and the four compilers of the Sunan, by way of al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was delivering a sermon to us when Ḥasan and Ḥusayn arrived, both wearing red shirts, walking and stumbling. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came down from (6) the pulpit, picked them up, and placed them in front of him. He then said, ‘Allah has spoken the truth: “Your wealth and your children are but a trial” (al-Taghābun 15). I looked at these two boys walking and stumbling, and I could not remain patient until I broke off my sermon and lifted them up.’” (7)
This is al-Tirmidhi’s wording, and he said, “It is gharīb (8); we do not know it except through the narration of al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid.”
He then said (9): al-Ḥasan (10) ibn ‘Arafah narrated to us; Ismā‘il ibn ‘Ayyāsh narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthmān ibn
