Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Al-Madāʾinī likewise reported that ʿUmar said this.

ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Umawī narrates—on the authority of his grandfather—that Muʿāwiyah once entered upon ʿUmar wearing a green robe. The Companions gazed at it admiringly, and when ʿUmar noticed this he leapt toward him with the darra (whip) and began striking him. Muʿāwiyah kept pleading, “Commander of the Believers, by Allah, by Allah, have mercy on me!” ʿUmar then returned to his seat. The people asked, “Why did you strike him, Commander of the Believers, when there is no one among your people like him?” He replied, “By Allah, I have seen nothing from him but good, and nothing has reached me about him except good—[had anything else reached me you would have seen from me something other than what you have just witnessed] (1). Yet I saw him”—and he gestured with his hand—“and I wished to humble whatever pride had swelled within him.”

Abū Dāwūd said: Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dimashqī narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ḥamzah narrated to us; Ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us; al-Qāsim ibn Mukhaimarah informed him; and Abū Maryam al-Azdī informed him, saying: I entered upon Muʿāwiyah and he said, “How pleasant your visit is, Abū So-and-so (2)—a phrase the Arabs customarily use.” I replied, “I shall relate to you a ḥadīth I have heard: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say,

‘Whomever Allah places in charge of any affair of the Muslims and he then screens himself from their needs, their wants (3), and their poverty, Allah will screen Himself from his needs, his wants, and his poverty.’ ”

When Muʿāwiyah heard this ḥadīth he appointed a man to attend to the people’s needs (4).

Al-Tirmidhī (5) and others also transmitted it.

Imām Aḥmad said: Marwān (6) ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Fazarī narrated to us; Ḥabīb ibn al-Shahīd narrated to us; from Abū Mijlaz, who said: Muʿāwiyah came out before the people, and they all stood up for him. He said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever likes people to stand up for him, let him take his seat in the Fire.’ ” (7)

In another wording he said: Muʿāwiyah came out before Ibn ʿĀmir and Ibn al-Zubayr. Ibn ʿĀmir rose for him while Ibn al-Zubayr did not. Muʿāwiyah said to Ibn ʿĀmir, “Sit down, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever is pleased that the servants stand up for him, let him take his seat in the Fire.’ ” (8)

(1) The phrase ma bayna hasarateyn (“between two sieges”) does not occur in B nor in Mukhtasar Tarikh Dimashq wa Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala‘. (2) ma anamna bika: that is, “what you have brought to us,” or “what you have effected for us.” (3) “al-khalla” (with a fatḥa on the khā’) means “need.” (4) Recorded by Abu Dawud (no. 2948) in Kitab al-Kharaj wal-Imara wal-Fay’: chapter on what the imam owes his subjects; it is a sahih (authentic) hadith. (5) Listed as no. 1333 in al-Ahkam: chapter “What has been reported concerning the imam of the subjects.” (6) In A it is altered to “Harun.” (7) Found in Musnad Ahmad (4:100), and it is a sahih (authentic) hadith. Al-Manawi notes in Fayd al-Qadir (6:31) that the imam may require people to stand in rows as a display of pride and deference, or to have them positioned at his head while he remains seated. Ibn al-Athir comments in Jami‘ al-Usul (6:536) that it is forbidden for the people to stand before the amir in such a manner—between his front and sides—because it arises from arrogance and the humiliation of the people. (8) Musnad Ahmad (4:91), and it is a sahih (authentic) hadith.
