Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted—through Abū Zurʿah, Abū Mus-hir, Saʿīd, and Rabīʿah—from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿAmīrah al-Muzanī, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say to Muʿāwiyah: ‘O Allah, make him a guide, rightly guided; guide him and guide others through him.’” (1)
Imām Aḥmad said: “ʿAlī ibn Baḥr narrated to us; al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us, from Rabīʿah ibn (2) Yazīd, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿAmīrah al-Azdi, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that when he mentioned Muʿāwiyah he said: ‘O Allah, make him a guide, rightly guided, and guide others through him.’” (3)
Al-Tirmidhī likewise reported it (4) from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā, from Abū Mus-hir, from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz with this chain, and he said: “It is ḥasan gharīb.”
It was also conveyed by ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid and Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān al-Ḥarrānī in the same manner as al-Walīd ibn Muslim and Abū Mus-hir: from Saʿīd, from Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿAmīrah.
Muḥammad ibn al-Muṣaffā transmitted it—from Marwān ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭāṭarī, from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, from Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd, from Abū Idrīs, from Ibn Abī ʿAmīrah—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, supplicated for Muʿāwiyah, saying: “O Allah, teach him knowledge, make him a guide, rightly guided; guide him and guide others through him.”
This was likewise narrated by Salamah ibn Shabīb, Ṣafwān ibn Ṣāliḥ, ʿĪsā ibn Hilāl, and Abū al-Azhar from Marwān al-Ṭāṭarī, though they did not mention Abū Idrīs in the chain.
Al-Ṭabarānī also related it—through ʿAbdān ibn Aḥmad, ʿAlī ibn Sahl al-Ramlī, al-Walīd ibn Muslim, Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and Yūnus ibn Maysarah ibn Ḥalbas—from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿAmīrah al-Muzanī, who heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mention Muʿāwiyah and say: “O Allah, make him a guide, rightly guided, and guide him.”
Ibn ʿAsākir said: “The wording reported by the majority is the correct one.” He devoted particular attention to this ḥadith, discussed it at length with enthusiasm, offered valuable insights, and displayed fine critical acumen. May Allah have mercy on him—how often he surpasses other scholars and critics in such matters.
Al-Tirmidhī also reported: “Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Muḥammad al-Nufaylī narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn Wāqid narrated to us, from Yūnus ibn Ḥalbas, from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, who said: When ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb removed ʿUmayr ibn Saʿd from Ḥimṣ and appointed Muʿāwiyah in his place, the people said (5), ‘ʿUmar has dismissed ʿUmayr and installed Muʿāwiyah.’ ʿUmayr (6) replied, ‘Do not mention Muʿāwiyah except…’”}[/TranslationOutput]
