she brought us a qasʿah—a large wooden bowl—containing only a waḍar (1) of food. I think it was barley that had already been eaten, with just a little left clinging to its sides. I mentioned the name of Allah and began scraping it together, and I ate until I was satisfied (2).
Al-Ṭabarānī said:
Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; from Maʿmar, from Ayyūb, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, that Abū Hurayrah said to his daughter, “Do not wear gold, for I fear for you the heat of the Flame (3).”
This report is transmitted from Abū Hurayrah through several chains.
Imām Aḥmad said:
Ḥajjāj narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; from Simāk ibn Ḥarb, from Abū al-Rabīʿ, that Abū Hurayrah said, “These sweepings are the ruin of your worldly life and your after-life”—meaning base desires and the food people consume.
Al-Ṭabarānī also related, from Ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb summoned him to place him in office, but he refused. ʿUmar said, “Do you dislike taking office when someone better than you held it?”—or he said, “sought it?” He asked, “Who is that?” ʿUmar replied, “Yūsuf, peace be upon him.” Abū Hurayrah replied, “Yūsuf was a prophet, the son of a prophet, whereas I am Abū Hurayrah son of Umaymah. I fear three things and two more.” ʿUmar said, “Why did you not simply say five?” He answered, “I fear that I might speak without knowledge, judge without forbearance, that my back be beaten, my wealth seized, and my honour reviled (4).”
Saʿīd ibn Abī Hind reported, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once said to him, “Will you not ask me for a share of these spoils, as your companions do? (5)” I replied, “I ask you only to teach me of what Allah has taught you.” He removed a namirah (6)—a striped cloak—from my back, spread it out between us until I could almost see the lice crawling on it (7), and then he related things to me. When he had finished his discourse he said, “Gather it together and tie it up.” From that morning on I did not forget a single letter of what he had taught me (8).
Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī said: I asked Abū Hurayrah, “How do you fast?” He replied, “I fast the first three days of every month; if something then happens to me, I still have the reward of the full month (9).”
Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated, from Thābit, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, that Abū Hurayrah was on a journey accompanied by some people
