Abu ʿUbayd said: He died in 53 AH. Others said it was 67 AH, and Ibn al-Jawzi stated in al-Muntaẓam that he passed away in this very year; Allah knows best.
Qutham ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (1): he was the person who most resembled the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He served as deputy governor of Madina during the time of ʿAlī, witnessed the conquest of Samarkand—beyond the Oxus—(2), and was martyred there, may Allah have mercy on him.
Kaʿb ibn ʿAmr (3), Abū al-Yasar al-Anṣārī al-Salamī: he was present at the Pledge of ʿAqaba and at Badr, on which day he captured al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib; thereafter he took part in every subsequent engagement alongside the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Abū Ḥātim (4) and others said that he died in 55 AH, and others added that he was the last of the veterans of Badr to die.
[Abū al-Yasar said: “I testify that I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, ‘Whoever grants a debtor in hardship a respite, or reduces what he owes, Allah will shade him on the Day when there is no shade except His shade.’”] (5)
[Then came the year 56 AH.] During it Junāda ibn Abī Umayya mounted the winter expedition in Byzantine territory; some said it was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Masʿūd.
