It was transmitted in like manner by Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār—the freedman of the House (1) of al-Zubayr—through Sālim, from his father, with wording identical to the narration of Anas ibn Mālik.
In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (2), through the isnād of Sufyān al-Thawrī from al-Miqdām ibn Shurayḥ, from his father, Saʿd related, concerning the Almighty’s words,
“And do not repel those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face” (al-Anʿām 6:52),
that the verse was revealed about six persons, among whom were Ibn Masʿūd and himself.
In another wording he said: “Allah revealed about me: ‘But if they strive with you to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them’ (Luqmān 31:15).” This occurred when, after he had embraced Islam, his mother abstained from food and drink for several days. Saʿd said to her: “By Allah, you know that if you possessed a hundred souls and they departed one after the other, I would never abandon this religion for anything. So eat and drink if you wish, and if you wish, do not eat and do not drink.” [When she saw his resolve, she ate] (3), whereupon the verse was sent down.
As for the ḥadith that testifies that the ten are promised Paradise, it is soundly established in the Ṣaḥīḥ (4) through the narration of Saʿīd ibn Zayd (5).
It is also reported, through Suhayl from his father, from Abū Hurayrah—in the story of the Cave of Ḥirāʾ (6)—that Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ is mentioned among them.
Hushaym and others narrated, from Mujālid, from al-Shaʿbī, from Jābir, who said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when Saʿd approached, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘This is my maternal uncle; let any man show me his uncles!’ ” Related by al-Tirmidhī (7).
Al-Ṭabarānī (8) reported: al-Ḥusayn ibn Isḥāq al-Tustarī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr, from Māʿiz al-Tamīmī, from Jābir, who said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when Saʿd approached, and he said, ‘This is my maternal uncle.’ ”
It is authentically recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥs, from Mālik and others, through al-Zuhrī, from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd, from his father, that “the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit him during the Farewell Ḥajj when a severe illness had overtaken him. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I am a man of wealth…’ ”
