Imam Aḥmad said:
Sulaymān ibn Dāwud al-Hāshimī narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from his father—⦗1⦘—on the authority of Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, who said:
“On the Day of Uḥud I saw to the right of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and to his left two men clad in white garments, fighting to protect him with the fiercest valor. I had never seen them before that day, nor after.”
Al-Wāqidī also transmitted it: Abū ⦗2⦘ Isḥāq ibn Abī ʿAbd Allah narrated to me, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ⦗3⦘—the grandfather of Ibn Abī ʿAwn—, from Ziyād, the freedman of Saʿd, on the authority of Saʿd, who said:
“On the Day of Badr I saw two men fighting on behalf of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, one on his right and the other on his left. I could see him looking at this one at times and at that one at times, delighted with the victory Allah—exalted is He—had granted.” ⦗4⦘
Al-Aʿmash said: from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamāh ⦗5⦘, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said:
“I saw Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ on the Day of Badr fighting like a mounted warrior while he was on foot.”
Sufyān said: from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿUbaydah ibn ⦗6⦘ ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd, from his father, who said:
“Saʿd, ʿAmmār, and I shared whatever booty we captured on the Day of Badr. Saʿd brought two prisoners, whereas ʿAmmār and I brought nothing.”
Mālik said: from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, who heard ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah say: ʿĀʾishah said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spent one night unable to sleep and then said, ‘If only a righteous man would guard me tonight.’ While we were in that state we heard the sound of weapons. The Messenger of Allah asked, ‘Who is it?’ He replied, ‘Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ; I have come to guard you, O Messenger of Allah.’ She continued: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then slept until I heard his snoring.” ⦗7⦘
The two Imams recorded it ⦗8⦘ through the narration of Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd. In another wording it states: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated for him and then slept.”
Aḥmad also said: Qutaybah narrated to us; Rishdīn ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from al-Ḥajjāj ⦗9⦘ ibn Shaddād, from Abū Ṣāliḥ
