Imam Aḥmad said:
[Yahya ibn Saʿid] ⦗1⦘ narrated to us from Yahya ibn Saʿid al-Anṣari, from Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, from Saʿd, who said:
“On the Day of Uḥud the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pledged both his father and his mother on my behalf.”
Aḥmad also transmitted it [through Ghundar] ⦗2⦘ from Shuʿbah, from Yahya ibn Saʿid al-Anṣari; it was likewise reported by al-Layth and several others from Yahya al-Anṣari ⦗3⦘. A number of scholars related the ḥadith from Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib on the authority of Saʿd, and it is also well known from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd on the authority of his father.
In some versions the wording is:
“May my father and mother be ransomed for you.”
Another wording states:
“He said, ‘Shoot! You are a sturdy youth.’” ⦗4⦘
Aḥmad ⦗5⦘ also said: Wakiʿ narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Shaddād, who said: I heard ʿAlī say, “I never heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offer both his father and his mother in ransom for anyone except Saʿd ibn Mālik. Indeed, I heard him say to him on the Day of Uḥud:
‘Shoot, O Saʿd! May my father and mother be ransomed for you.’”
Al-Bukhārī ⦗6⦘ related it from Abū Nuʿaym, from Misʿar, from Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm with this chain. Shuʿbah also narrated it from Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm, and Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah and others transmitted it from Yahya ibn Saʿid al-Anṣari, from Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib with the same wording.
Al-Aʿmash reported—from Abū Khālid—from Jābir ibn Samurah, who said: “The first person to shoot an arrow in the path of Allah was Saʿd (may Allah be pleased with him).”
ʿAbd al-Razāq said: Maʿmar informed us, from Ayyub, that he heard ʿĀʾishah bint Saʿd say: “I am the daughter of the Emigrant for whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ransomed both parents.”
Al-Wāqidī said: ʿUbaydah bint Nābil ⦗7⦘ told me, on the authority of ʿĀʾishah bint Saʿd, from her father, who said: “I saw myself shooting arrows on the Day of Uḥud, and a fair-complexioned, handsome man whom I did not recognize would hand the arrows back to me; later I came to think he was an angel.”
