In the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections it is related from him that he said, “Ever since I embraced Islam, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never barred me from his presence, nor did he ever look at me without smiling.” ⦗1⦘
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb used to say, “Jarīr is this community’s Joseph.”
ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr remarked, “I saw Jarīr, and his face looked like a slice of the moon.”
Al-Shaʿbī relates that Jarīr and a group of men were once with ʿUmar in a house. ʿUmar sensed an odour coming from some of them and said, “I place under oath the one responsible for this smell to stand up and perform wuḍūʾ (ablution).” Jarīr responded, “Shall we not all rise and perform wuḍūʾ, O Commander of the Believers?” ʿUmar replied, “An excellent leader you were in al-jāhiliyyah (the pre-Islamic era), and an excellent leader you are in Islam.” ⦗2⦘
Jarīr served ʿUthmān as governor over Hamadhān ⦗3⦘ and its surrounding districts—it is said he lost an eye there. When ʿUthmān was killed, he withdrew from both ʿAlī and Muʿāwiyah and remained in al-Jazīrah until he died at al-Sharā in 51 AH, according to al-Wāqidī. Others say 54 AH, and others 56 AH.
As for Jaʿfar ibn Abī Sufyān ⦗4⦘ ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, he embraced Islam together with his father when they met the Prophet ﷺ between Mecca and Medina in the Year of the Conquest. After the Prophet turned them back, Abū Sufyān said, “By Allah, if he will not grant me audience, I will take this son of mine by the hand and roam the earth so that no one knows where I have gone.” When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard this, he was moved to compassion, admitted them, and accepted their profession of faith. They entered Islam sincerely, even though Abū Sufyān had previously caused the Messenger of Allah ﷺ great harm. Jaʿfar was present at Ḥunayn and was among those who stood firm that day.
Haritha ibn al-Nuʿmān al-Anṣārī al-Najjārī ⦗5⦘ fought at Badr, Uḥud, the Trench, and all the other battles. He was one of the distinguished Companions. It is reported that he saw Jibrīl with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Maqāʿid conversing together after Khaybar, and that he beheld him on the day of Banū Qurayẓa in the likeness of Dihya al-Kalbī ⦗6⦘.
