Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Here are the names of those who were put to death at ʿAdhrāʾ:
Ḥujr ibn ʿAdī, Sharīk ibn Shaddād, Ṣayfī ibn Faṣīl al-Shaybānī, Qabīṣah ibn Ḍubayʿah al-ʿAbsī, Muḥriz ibn Shihāb al-Minqarī al-Saʿdī, and Kidām ibn Ḥayyān⦗1⦘ al-ʿAnazī—together with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥassān al-ʿAnazī, the man whom Ziyād had sent back and who was buried alive in al-Nāṭif⦗2⦘.

Some people claim that their graves are in Masjid al-Qaṣab, on its western side⦗3⦘; others maintain that they lie in Masjid al-Sabʿah outside Bāb Tūmā—the mosque being named “al-Sabʿah” (the Seven) because of them—on its eastern side⦗4⦘. The correct view, however, is that they are buried at ʿAdhrāʾ in the Ghūṭah of Damascus, may Allah be pleased with them.

It is related that when they were about to kill Ḥujr he said, “Let me perform ablution.” They replied, “Do so.” He then said, “Allow me to pray two rakʿahs.” He prayed them briefly and, on finishing, declared, “By Allah, I have never prayed anything shorter than these two rakʿahs. Had it not been that people would claim I feared death, I would have lengthened them—for other prayers have already gone before them.”

They then led him to the place of execution—his and his companions’ graves having been dug and their shrouds laid out. When the executioner stepped forward, Ḥujr’s limbs shook. Someone remarked, “Did you not say you felt no anxiety about being killed?” He answered, “And why should I not tremble when I see a grave already dug, a shroud spread out, and a sword unsheathed?” The saying became proverbial.

The executioner was Abū Sharīf al-Badawī; some say it was another man. As he was about to strike, he told Ḥujr, “Lift your neck and stiffen it.” Ḥujr replied, “I will not assist in killing myself, only to be questioned about it on the Day of Resurrection.” The man then struck and killed him.

Ḥujr had requested that he be buried in his shackles, and that was done—though another report states that he was washed and the funeral prayer was offered for him.

It is narrated that when al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī was informed of the killing of Ḥujr and his companions he asked, “Were the funeral prayer offered for them? Were they washed? Were they turned toward the qiblah? Were they buried in their fetters?” When told that all this had been done, he said, “Then, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah, they have indeed accomplished the ḥajj!⦗5⦘”

The more likely opinion is that the speaker here was al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī—or al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī⦗6⦘—for Ḥujr was executed in 51 AH, some say 53 AH, and in either case al-Ḥasan (ibn ʿAlī) had already passed away. Allah knows best.

(1) In the printed edition, it is miswritten as Habban. (2) Omitted in manuscripts Ṭ and B. (3) In the printed edition, the term al-Gharbiyyah (the Western quarter) is corrupted to ‘Arifah. The Qasab Mosque quarter is well known in Damascus; it lies east of the al-‘Amara quarter. (4) The text enclosed by double brackets appears only in witness A. (5) hajjahu yajji’uhu ḥajj-an: he overpowered him by means of the ḥujjah (proof). (6) The passage between the double brackets is omitted in manuscripts Ṭ and B; this accords with Ibn al-‘Atir’s statement in al-Kāmil (vol. 3, p. 486).
