Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

— meaning so-and-so. Thereupon Ḥujr scooped up a handful of pebbles, hurled them at him, and said, “You lie; may Allah’s curse be upon you.” Ziyād stepped down, led the prayer, then entered the palace and had Ḥujr brought before him.

Another report relates that when Ziyād delivered his sermon he prolonged it and delayed the prayer. Ḥujr called out to him, “The prayer,” but Ziyād went on with his discourse.⦗1⦘ When Ḥujr feared that the prayer time would pass, he seized a handful of pebbles and shouted, “The prayer!” in so loud and mighty a voice that it was heard by everyone inside the mosque and outside it.⦗2⦘ The people rose with him. Seeing this, Ziyād came down and led them in prayer. Once he had finished, he wrote to Muʿāwiyah about Ḥujr, piling on the accusations.

Muʿāwiyah replied: “Clap him in irons and send him to me.” Accordingly, Ziyād dispatched the chief of police, Shaddād ibn al-Haytham, together with his aides. They said to Ḥujr, “The governor summons you,” but he refused to appear, and his followers stood between him and them. The prefect returned to Ziyād and informed him, whereupon Ziyād mustered bands from the various tribes and rode with the prefect against Ḥujr and his companions. Fighting broke out between them with stones and clubs, yet they could not subdue him. Ziyād then commissioned Muḥammad ibn al-Ashʿath, gave him three days, and equipped him with an army. They pursued Ḥujr relentlessly until they brought him to Ziyād.

Neither his clan nor anyone else he had counted on to help him availed him. Ziyād put him in fetters, kept him in prison for ten days, and then sent him to Muʿāwiyah, dispatching with him a group of men to testify that he had reviled the caliph, fought the governor, and declared, “This authority is fit only for the family of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib.”

Among those who testified against him were Abū Burdah ibn Abī Mūsā, Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr, ʿUmar ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, Isḥāq, Ismāʿīl, and Mūsā—the three sons of Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh—al-Mundhir ibn al-Zubayr, Kathīr ibn Shihāb, Shabath ibn Ribʿī,⦗3⦘ and others, numbering about seventy men in all.⦗4⦘

It is said that the written testimony of Shurayḥ the judge was also included, but he denied this, saying, “All I told Ziyād was that Ḥujr was a man who fasted by day and stood in prayer by night.”

Ziyād then sent Ḥujr and his companions to Syria under the escort of Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr and Kathīr ibn Shihāb.

A group of Ḥujr ibn ʿAdī’s followers were taken with him—some say twenty, others say fourteen men. They included: al-Arqam ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Kindī, Sharīk ibn Shaddād al-Ḥaḍramī, Ṣayfī ibn Fasil,⦗5⦘ Qabīṣah ibn Ḍubayʿah ibn Ḥarmalah al-ʿAbsī, Karīm ibn ʿAfīf al-Khatʿamī, ʿĀṣim ibn ʿAwf al-Bajalī, and Waraqāʾ ibn Sumayy al-Bajalī.
