Her given name had been Barrah, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed it to Juwayriyah (1). She was a mulāḥah—that is, pleasant and engaging in speech. She passed away in this very year, according to Ibn al-Jawzi and others, at the age of sixty-five. Al-Waqidi, however, places her death in 56 AH—may Allah be pleased with her and grant her His good pleasure.
As for Safiyyah bint Huyayy (2) ibn Akhtab ibn Saʿyah (3) ibn Thaʿlabah ibn ʿUbayd (4) ibn Kaʿb ibn al-Khazraj ibn Abī Ḥabīb ibn al-Naḍīr ibn al-Niḥām ibn Naḥūm—Mother of the Believers, a woman of Banū al-Naḍīr and a descendant of Aaron, the brother of Moses (may Allah have mercy on them)—she lived in Madinah with her father and her uncle Ḥudayy ibn Akhtab. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ expelled Banū al-Naḍīr, they moved to Khaybar, and her father Huyayy was executed with Banū Qurayẓah, as previously mentioned. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Khaybar, Safiyyah was among the captives and fell by lot to Dihyah ibn Khalifah al-Kalbi. Word of her beauty and noble lineage reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he selected her for himself, compensated Dihyah for her, and she embraced Islam. He then set her free and married her; when they reached Ṣahbāʾ (5) he consummated the marriage, and Umm Sulaym arranged her hair.
She had earlier been married to her cousin Kinānah ibn Abī al-Ḥuqayq, who was killed in the fighting at Khaybar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed a bruise on her cheek and asked, “What is this?” She replied, “I dreamed that a moon came from Yathrib and settled in my lap. When I told my cousin the dream, he struck me and said, ‘Do you fancy that the king of Yathrib will marry you?’ The mark you see is from that blow.”
She ranked among the foremost women in worship, piety, asceticism, dutifulness, and charity—may Allah be pleased with her.
Al-Waqidi states that she died in 50 AH; others say in 36 AH. The first view is more sound, and Allah knows best.
As for Umm Sharik al-Ansariyyah (6)—some say she belonged to Banū ʿĀmir—she is the woman who offered herself to the Prophet ﷺ, and it is said that he accepted her,
