but Marwān refused to allow that—although he had already been removed from office that day and sought only thereby to please Muʿāwiyah—and Marwān remained an enemy of the Banū Hāshim until the day he died.
Jābir said: On that day I spoke to Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī and said, “Abā ʿAbdillāh, fear Allah; your brother would not have approved of what you now behold. Bury him in al-Baqīʿ beside his mother.” So he did.
Al-Wāqidī also related: “ʿAbdullāh ibn Nāfiʿ told me, from his father, from Ibn ⦗1⦘ ʿUmar, who said: ‘I was present when al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī was dying. I said to Ḥusayn, “Fear Allah; do not provoke civil strife or shed blood. Lay your brother to rest next to his mother, for he charged you with that.”’ He said: ‘So I complied.’”
Al-Wāqidī transmitted a similar report from Abū Hurayrah.
In another account: al-Ḥasan sent to request ʿĀʾishah’s permission for this, and she granted it. When he died, Ḥusayn armed himself, and the Umayyads did the same, saying, “We will not allow him to be buried with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Shall ʿUthmān be laid in al-Baqīʿ while al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī is interred in the chamber?!” When the people feared that fighting might erupt, Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, Abū Hurayrah, Jābir, and Ibn ʿUmar advised Ḥusayn not to fight; he accepted their counsel and buried his brother near their mother’s grave in al-Baqīʿ.
Sufyān al-Thawrī reported, from Sālim ibn Abī Ḥafṣah, from Abū Ḥāzim: “I saw Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī that day put Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ forward to lead the funeral prayer over al-Ḥasan, and he said, ‘Had it not been the Sunnah, I would not have put him forward.’”
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq said: Musāwar, the client of Banū Saʿd ibn Bakr, related to me: “I saw Abū Hurayrah standing at the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī died, crying out in a loud voice, ‘O people! Today the beloved of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has passed away—so weep ⦗2⦘.’”
So many people gathered for his funeral that al-Baqīʿ could not accommodate them because of the crush. Men and women mourned him for seven days, and the women of the Banū Hāshim continued their lament [mourning him for a month, and the women of the Banū Hāshim observed mourning rites] ⦗3⦘ for an entire year.
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān said: Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us, from Jaʿfar ⦗4⦘ ibn Muḥammad, from his father, who said: “ʿAlī was killed at the age of fifty-eight; al-Ḥasan died at that same age, and al-Ḥusayn was killed at that age as well.”
Shuʿbah narrated, from Abū Bakr ibn Ḥafṣ, who said: “Saʿd and al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī both died within a few days of one another, ten years into the rule of Muʿāwiyah.”
