Another narrator said:
Their reconciliation and Muʿāwiyah’s entry into Kūfah took place in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, year 41 AH. We have already discussed the details earlier.
In essence, al-Ḥasan agreed with Muʿāwiyah that he would receive whatever was in the public treasury of Kūfah, and Muʿāwiyah honored the pact. Al-Ḥasan collected the funds, which amounted to five million—some said seven million—(silver dirhams). It was also agreed that the land tax (kharāj) of Baṣrah—some said of Darābjird (1)—would be assigned to him every year. When the people of that district refused to pay the tax, Muʿāwiyah compensated al-Ḥasan with six million dirhams annually. Al-Ḥasan continued to receive that sum, in addition to his regular stipends, grants, gifts, and presents on each of his visits, until he died in the same year.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd (2) reported, through Hawdhah ibn Khalīfah, from ʿAwf, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, who said:
When Muʿāwiyah arrived in Kūfah and al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī gave him the bayʿah, Muʿāwiyah’s companions said to him, “Order al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī to address the people about this; he is young and not eloquent—perhaps he will hesitate and their regard for him will decline.” Muʿāwiyah did so.
Al-Ḥasan ascended the pulpit and said in his sermon:
“O people! Were you to search from Jabalq to Jabars (3) you would not find a man—other than my brother and myself—whose grandfather is a Prophet. We have pledged our allegiance to Muʿāwiyah, and we hold that sparing Muslim blood is better than shedding it. By Allah, I do not know; perhaps this is a trial for you and an enjoyment for a while.” He then pointed toward Muʿāwiyah.
Muʿāwiyah grew angry and said, “What did you mean by that?”
Al-Ḥasan replied, “I meant by it what Allah meant.” Muʿāwiyah then mounted the pulpit and delivered a sermon after him.
This report has been transmitted by more than one narrator (4). We have already mentioned that Muʿāwiyah reproached his companions [for what they had said when al-Ḥasan delivered that sermon] (5).
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd (6) also said: Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn Khumayr, who said:
I heard [ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn] (7) Jubayr ibn Nufayr al-Ḥaḍramī relate from his father, who said: I said to al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī, “People allege that you seek the caliphate.”
He replied, “The heads of the Arabs were once in my hand: they would make peace with whomever I made peace and wage war against whomever I waged war. I relinquished it, seeking Allah’s Countenance—shall I stir it up a second time among the people of the Ḥijāz (8)?”
