Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

of Fāṭimah, whereupon he called out, “O lukaʿ (1), O lukaʿ, O lukaʿ!” But no one answered him. He therefore turned away, and I turned away with him, until we reached the courtyard of ʿĀʾishah, where he sat down.

Abū Hurayrah said: Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī then arrived—we had assumed his mother had held him back to fasten a sakhāb (2) around his neck. When he entered, the Messenger of Allah embraced him, and he embraced the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet then said:

“O Allah, I love him [so love him], and love those who love him,” three times.

Both of them (3) transmitted this report through Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, from ʿUbaydullāh, with the same chain.

Aḥmad (4) also said: Ḥammād al-Khayyāṭ narrated to us; Hishām ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Nuʿaym ibn ʿAbdullāh al-Mujmir, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—went out to the market of Banū Qaynuqāʿ leaning on my arm. He walked around it and then returned, sat in the mosque with his knees drawn up, and said, ‘Where is lukaʿ? Call lukaʿ for me.’ Al-Ḥasan came running until he leapt into his lap. The Prophet put his mouth over his and then said, ‘O Allah, I love him, so love him, and love those who love him,’ three times.”

Abū Hurayrah added, “Whenever I saw al-Ḥasan my eyes overflowed”—or he said, “my eyes welled up,” or “they wept.”

This chain meets Muslim’s criteria, yet he did not include it.

It was also narrated by al-Thawrī, from Nuʿaym, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, in the same or similar wording.

Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Muzarrid (5) reported it from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, with a similar wording that contains an additional detail.

Abū Isḥāq narrated, from al-Ḥārith, from ʿAlī, something to the same effect.

ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-Kanāt (6) reported it from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿĀʾishah, likewise with an extra detail.

Sufyān al-Thawrī and others narrated, from Sālim ibn Abī Ḥafṣah, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Abū Hurayrah (7), that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:

“Whoever loves al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn has loved me, and whoever hates them has hated me.”

It is gharib through this particular chain (8).

(1) Ibn al-Athir states in al-Nihaya (vol. 4, p. 268): “luk‘a can be used of a young child; if applied to an adult, it implies smallness in knowledge and intellect.” (2) sukhāb: a necklace made from cloves, musk, oud, and similar perfume mixtures, fashioned like a misbahah (prayer beads) and worn by children and slave-girls. It is also said to be a string with beads named sukhāb for the sound its beads make when moved. (3) Found in Sahih al-Bukhari no. 5884 and Sahih Muslim no. 2421 (57) in the Book of Virtues. (4) In Ahmad’s Musnad (vol. 2, p. 532); its isnad is classified as ḥasan. (5) In the printed edition it appears as “Barud,” a corruption; he is listed among the narrators in al-Tahdhib. (6) In the printed edition this word is rendered as al-lubab; the correct reading is preserved in al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil (vol. 6, p. 165) and elsewhere. (7) The passage enclosed between the two marginal lines—about one page in length—is found only in the printed edition. (8) Narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad (vol. 2, p. 531), by al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak (vol. 3, p. 171), and by others; it is classified as ḥasan.
